This Plextor 24X DVDrw USB Retail by Lite-On is an excellent DVD drive. I took a chance on it with only three previous reviews, but it works well. It is fast, and quiet, and burns good copies.

I bought two of them, for different computers. The first one I installed with all the optional software, and there was a problem burning the disc. I uninstalled ALL the software that came with the burner [using a restore point], and then let XP find and install the hardware when I reconnected the drive. Then I used another software to burn with, and have had no problems at all. I am very happy with it.

The software I am using is Express Burn v 4.30 by NCH software. It is very simple, intuitive and easy to use, without bloatware. I am not recommending all NCH software ... some programs seem buggy, but this program works well with DVD burners.

[For other buyers, I have not had these burners long, so I don't know how well they last, but I presume they will last as long as I need them to.]

I read a review on another site that said this drive would work with a Mac and so I took a shot on it. Definitely works! I primarily rip DVDs to my hard drive or will burn copies onto blank DVDs for backup. I use RipIt and Toast Titanium 10 and both worked flawlessly with this drive. Definitely fast, quiet and might I say it looks really nice and attractive sitting on my desk. All you have to do is plug this baby into your USB port and you are good to go. When you use the Apple DVD player, it reads the movie perfectly. Since this was a new drive the player asked me to set the region code but that is standard whenever you use a player for the first time. Don't worry about the included software since that is PC only and frankly, you won't need it if using it with a Mac. This is the best burner out there right now and Amazon has a great price for it. When shopping around for burners, I noticed they're several slower ones which are more expensive and can't even handle all the multiple formats that the Plextor can do. Definitely pick this up if you own an Apple. For you serious techies, I'm running Mac OS X Snow Leopard on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Apple iMac with 4GB of RAM.

I find no fault in the drive; it performs accurately and well. However, its rate of performance is dependent upon the computer with which it is being used, and the capabilities of that product. To get the most from the Plextor, much depends on the connection, which optimally is SATA. With older USB connectiions, copying speed is compromised. This doesn't mean it won't work for copying and burning--but don't expect whirlwind performance without the SATA connection.

The unit is handsome and very smooth and silent operationally, capable of blending with just about any decor--hence safe from the self-appointed stereotypical bitchy "decorator" housewife--that is, unless she gets her kicks by whining about everything that she doesn't personally select.

No problems with single or dual layer discs. Everything has copied perfectly so far, which is typical of Plextor's sterling reputation. Now that the company is absorbed by Lite-On, one would hope that such quality would continue. A few years back, I heard that some manufacturers of cheaper products were using plastic rather than glass lasers, which resulted in progressive performance deterioration.

It is my understanding that this unit may no longer be available under the Plextor brand name. If you can locate one, I would encourage buying it.

Unit was well packaged, Beautiful high gloss finish. Unpacked from box, plugged it in to a USB port, and windows Vista automatically configured the unit. Runs fast, and extremely quiet. I have to put my hand on it to feel for vibration to even tell if it's running. Great unit would buy again

This is the second Plextor burner that I've purchased and once again it's really good. It's so easy to use and it's very quiet. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a reliable external burner.

I bought the Plextor because I wanted to back up my 1,000 strong library. I had originally bought an ASUS slim line cd rom which backed up okay but made a bit of noise and couldn't take the increasingly demanding downloading tasks I placed on it Plextor is a powerful workhorse and is also elegant and 'easy to clean' if you have a microfiber cloth on hand. I still us the ASUS slim for travel as it is also a very adequate drive.

This recorder has very well. I have tried other brands and for and external burner it is great.

Was initially sent 2 USB connectors , but no power adapter. They simply requested my emailing a screenshot of proof-of-purchase (which I did) and the adapter arrived in a few days. Courteous staff too. A quality product! Fast and very quiet. I Recommend!

It works as it states only thing I was not thrilled about is the software that came with the product.
