There is a huge difference in performance between run-of-the-mill mechanical drives and SSD technology. Plextor is a lesser know brand in the SSD world, possibly due to the cost per GB of their drives. However, their SSD failure rate can be compared with Intel and Samsung drives.

This Plextor M5S 128GB drive has the following advertised stats:

Size: 128GB
DRAM Cache: 256MB DDR3
Sequential Read (6Gb/s): 520 MB/s
Sequential Write (6Gb/s): 200 MB/s
Random Read: 71,000 IOPS
Random Write: 51,000 IOPS
MBTF: 1,500,000 hours
Dimensions: 69.85mm x 100mm x 9.5mm
Warranty: 3-year

Regretfully, the Plextor M5S will not fit into some ultra slim notebooks which require a 7.5mm drive. However, in my case this wasn't an issue and I was able to swap my old mechanical drive for this drive without any problems. This was my very first SSD so I was very curious about real world performance. There is a lot of information out there about SATA III (SATA 6.0Gb/s) performance benchmarks of various SSD manufacturers. I found that it wasn't the case for SATA II, which is what my laptop currently has.

I wanted to install Windows XP on this drive particularly because XP doesn't take up as much space as Windows 7 does. Windows XP does not have TRIM support, but according to my research, the firmware and the Marvell drive controller in the M5S do a great job with garbage collection so TRIM would not be absolutely necessary to keep this drive running at top speed. Before Win XP can be installed, this drive needed to be connected to another computer that already had an operating system installed to align the SSD with DiskPar (there is a great tutorial online for that if you google "align ssd diskpar").

Simply Amazing! I thought my Seagate 7200RPM 2TB SATA 6GB/s was fast, but this little drive blows it out of the water. I went from a 5.4 to 7.9 on Windows 7 user experience. I did a fresh install of Win 7 x64 and it was a breeze. First, I disconnected my 3 existing hard drives, and connected SSD to SATA 66GB/s port, and instantly my mobo recogized PX-256M5S SSD. I enabled ACHI in BIOS, booted windows from a 4gb thumb drive, and windows loaded and configured itself on the new drive within 5 minutes. Once up in windows, ensure TRIM is set to "ON" as this to handle garbage collection overhead.

Once the drive was loaded, I reconnected my 3 mechnical hard drives and now I have 6TB for data storage and 256GB SSD for OS. Not only does windows boot much faster (12sec), everything else runs so much more smoother and responsive than before. Yes, it worth every penny!

Last thoughts, from what I read, the PX-256M5S is not advertized as the fastest drive on the market, as they focus on consistency in both read and write IOPS which means the Plextor SSD should have the same out of the box performance, for its entire lifespan, and regardless of how full it is.

After my hd crashed, I decided to upgrade to a SSD drive, since the the prices are dropping
compared to a few years back, I decided to take the plunge, and will never be looking back to conventional HD's ! Boot up time is extremely fast, everytime windows boots up it feels like a fresh copy was just installed and not bogged out, launching applications (adobe photoshop, illustrator etc) opens up in seconds. Dont hesitate, purchase with confidence ! Also plextor is a great company all my optical drives are Plextors

Pros:
As fast as advertised when using the right SATA III controller; very light weight

Cons:
Not alot of reviews due to Plextor being new to SSD's; No 2.5"-3.5" mounting bracket; No screws

Thoughts and edits:
I've had the unit since Monday 10/22/12. Installation was relatively simple despite the lack of screws or 2.5-3.5 bracket as my case has a built in ssd mount on the bottom. Easy to setup. Only giving the unit 3 stars because my drives read speed is well under the "up to 520mb/s" advertised on the box. The benchmarks ran (Crystal Disk Mark, Atto, and AS SSD) all show the drive reading at around 380mb/s-400mb/s. The writes on the other hand are pretty spot on. The back of the box says "up to 200mb/s". My tests show it's getting around 200+. I'll have to have the drive for longer so I can find out if the drive loses allot of performance over time or if it stays fairly consistent with the given speeds before I reccomend over another brand. If it stays consistent over time then I'll be happy with the drive.

Edit:
I recently purchased a second SSD for my computer due to space and when I got that installed I realized there were 2 different colored groupings of SATA III on my motherboard after reading my manual I found out 2 ports are a AS media controlled SATA III connector and the other 2 are Intel controlled SATA III connectors. I had the SSD installed on the AS Media controller so I switched them to the Intel SATA III controller and after booting back up ran AS SSD (504.16mb/s;196.9mb/s), CrystalDiskMark (521.8mb/s;203.8mb/s), and ATTO (535.7mb/s;204.5mb/s) (read;write) benches again the reads jumped up to where they should have been averaging 520.6mb/s and writes averaging 201.7mb/s just above advertised.
