I discovered that the drive worked fine with DVDs but not CDs. Plextor support was excellent (returning e-mails on weekend evenings, even).

It turned out to be a known hardware defect. One annoying downside is that return shipping for warrantee support is paid for by the customer, even though the fault was with Plextor (not that this kind of return policy is unusual).

It's fast!. With 4x media like TDK you can burn at 8x (DVD+R only). I like the option of having multiple formats, and with Plextor quality, that's even better!

I got this burner for christmas and its been flawless. I got a 25 pack of 4x Memorex DVD+Rs and I haven't made a coaster yet. It burns the memorex 4x at 8x speeds! Takes me around 4-8 minutes to burn a disk. Plus plextor has a very good reputation and are always updating firmware to keep up to date with the lastest DVD media.

I owned the PX-708A for less than 2 years. It recorded DVDs with unpredictable results. After spending hours working on a DVD production and burning it with the PX-708A,it would fail during playback. Wasted many high quality DVDs. Recently wrote to Plextor to try to get my PX-708A repaired for a price, since it was out of warranty. They replied that they no longer fix opitical drives. I replied back to them how disapponted I was, since at the time I paid $218.00 for this drive. The responded, "it's out of warranty, there's nothing we can do."
Look elsewhere for someone who stands behind their product after the warranty runs out. It sure isn't Plextor.

I have had my PX 708A since Dec 2003 and it has always performed as expected with a burn speed of about 7.80X as an average for a DVD + R. I have had only a couple of coaster while writing to a CD-R at 48X. I don't know much about all the other burners but I can say this, if I call Plex Support as to how to do something, I always get a knowledgeable technical support person that speaks REAL English, and they know what you are are talking about! I don't think you can get this level of service anywhere else like the commodity supplier to include Sony, Dell, LG, HP or even Panasonic, maybe Canon but hay they don't make burners yet. People that know, know Plextor, it is usually the one setting the standard and it it is almost always the the best Optical drive you can buy,however you may have specific needs and have no need for the quality or features that Plextor offers. This unit is now dated so it should go for about fifty to seventy five bucks, buy new if you can.
