1.0 out of 5 stars NOT a True Plextor. Inform yourself!
I've used Plextor DVD burners for years, and I'm stunned by my just-purchased PX-800A: the Plextor-specific features that made Plextor the best are GONE. COMPLETELY GONE. The PX-800A is missing AutoStrategy, PoweRec, VariRec, GigaRec, Silent Mode, SecuRec, and support for many of the testing functions of PlexTools Pro.

Moreover, the drive has thus far failed to overburn (using Nero BurningROM and the best media available: Taio Yuden DVD+R). Plextor has gone from the best overburning performance in the industry... to complete failure. OK, wait. I've now been able to overburn using the Plextools Pro software, but being chained to Plextor software is unacceptable.

I've done some exploring on the internet and learned that the PX-800A is actually a NEC-Sony Optiarc AD-7170A with a Plextor name slapped on it. Plextor apparently no longer manufactures optical drives.

Does this seem like a bait-and-switch scam to you? Plextor owes full disclosure in its product descriptions.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed, March 12, 2008

My husband bought this dvd drive for my brithday which was 5 months ago. I had vouched on plextor to be one of the better brands out there for a dvd burner. I can say now that plextor is now making a liar out of me. My dvd burner quit today. there is now a clicking sound in it when you put in a dvd to play. its not showing any media in the device or anything. i have unplugged this device, re-booted vista and plugged it back in. Nothing!!!!..it is still not reading the media. googled it on goole tryeid other people ideas still nothing. Now i have just read that alot of people are having problems with it. of not being able to read the media or when they burn something on it..it won't read it after its burnt. I had bought two plextors six years ago and they are still kicking. the new ones plextor are making are not lasting long now. come to think of it nowadays nothing is lasting long no more. Plextor use to be good no its to the bottom of the barrel like the other brands. I don't even know what to buy thats good anymore....:(
And to make a note on the dvd burner. No..i didn't burn alot of medias on it..come to think of it hardly at all. this was my 7 dvd i burnt..now its not working
