I bought this burner about a week ago and I've been extremely impressed with it. I've already burned about 20 flawless CD's (both audio & data).

First of all, Plextor is one of the top brands in CD burner technology. This model lives up to the name with solid construction and top quality. Secondly, the BURN-Proof technology ensures you don't get the dreaded "buffer underrun" problem that is so prevalent with other burners that are USB-based. I've created countless coasters with other burners I tried because of that problem.....a problem that is non-existent with this machine.

An important thing to note is that if you're running USB 1.1, you will only be able to burn at 4x speed (which is the max throughput capabilities of USB 1.1). So, you'll need an upgrade to USB 2.0 (either via a USB 2.0 interface card which you can buy separately or waiting for your OS vendor to release a USB 2.0 driver update) to enjoy the full benefits of 24x speed burns.

I can't say enough good things about this burner after experiencing the headaches with low-quality burners from other vendors...

I am writing this review 'cause I want to make sure others can also enjoy this wonderful product.

I bought this product two days ago and got everything working within 10 minutes, a true "Plug-and-play", I burned three CDs w/ different speed, first w/ 4X, then 12X, and then 24X. They all worked perfect!

Then I burned a few more CDs using 24X, and things just worked very well, I am very happy w/ this toy!

I want to thank to the guy who wrote his review earlier, and his good experience helped me make up my mind on buying this one, and I was a little bit nervous though, 'cause it was the only review there.

Now, another happy user, and hope this helps those who are still evaluating their buying choice.

As one who is not particularly technically sophisticated, I have been amazed and delighted by this product. It is remarkably easy to use as is the software that comes with it. Every CD I have burned with it has been perfect. My primary use is to make CDs of my digital pictures and it has been so helpful in preserving space on my hard drive. I am using a Belkin USB2 adaptor card with an HP Omnibook notebook computer. I am a true novice but was up and running with the PlexWriter in just a few minutes and have had consistent good results.

The Plextor 24/10/40U was a replacement for my first generation CD-R drive (around 4 years old), and it is a great improvement.

The Plextor is an external drive, hooking up via a USB port. It is a heavy unit with a small external power brick (not integrated). It would not be suitable for carrying around with your laptop, but I appreciate the solid and durable feel, which would not be the case with a light portable unit.

The Plextor is a USB 2.0 device, but it is compatible with USB 1.1, which is the way I have to run it for now. The write speed for CD-R therefore has to drop to 4x rather than the 24x posssible with USB 2.0. Nevertheless, 4x is much faster than the 1x I had to run my original CD-R. A buffer underrun facility allows you to keep using your computer for normal activity without worrying that the CD being copied to will temporarily run out of data, turning it into a coaster. (On my original CD-R, I had to leave my hands off the computer while copying was being done.) I've not tested CD-W (writing multiple times to a CD-W disk), but that is supposed to run at 10x under USB 2.0.

The new version of the Easy CD Creator software is much improved over the original Easy CD Creator. It was simple to do a straight CD to CD-R copy, copy a bunch of files from my hard drive to the CD-R, and create a disk of thousands of files from a single ISO image (an ISO image of Linux install disks).

After a disastrous experience with a Sony Digital Relay drive, I was ready to give up on burning CDs, convinced by Sony's technical support that my four-year-old computer wasn't up to the task. Plextor proved us wrong, quickly and decisively. It took less than ten minutes to hook up the drive and install the software, and since then I've burned many music and data CDs
-- at a variety of speeds -- without a single coaster. It's fast, easy-to-use, and flawless!

I first bought a different external CD writer and all I can say is that I have an extensive collection of coasters and few working CDs. I thought the problem was ME UNTIL I bought THIS DRIVE. I have not had a single problem or made a single coaster. This drive is brilliantly EASY to use and WORKS like a dream.

I bought the Plextor because of the good reviews that I read on Amazon's site. It must be a great machine but I could not get it to work on my Mac. It is advertised as a Mac product but the enclosed manual was mostly PC based and the accompaniing software was entirely for PC. So I went to CompUSA, bought Toast Titanium 5 which is the most widely used burner software for Mac ..., went home and wrestled with it some more and finally...called Plextor tech Support. Toast is incompatable with the Plextor CD-RW! So I'm packing it back to Amazon today.
I went to Mac Warehouse and bought a CD-RW by LaCie, which is a very Mac friendly company.

I'm very critical when it comes to reviewing anything I buy. This CD/RW burner - my first - is just fantastic. It was very simple to set up, the software that came with it was decent and did everything I needed it to do. Of course, you can upgrade for an additional cost, but so what. The hardware is relatively unobtrusive, solid, and hums like a sewing machine when burning. Music CD's take from 10-15 mins a piece, which is no biggie. I love it for backing up documents I'm working on. A very lengthy novel I was writing would overwrite on a CD/RW disk instantaneously, as opposed to an A:/ drive floppy backup, which would often take a good 20 seconds or more. I have had absolutely no problems with this drive and I'm working on a Dell laptop set up as a desktop. To be honest, I didn't think I would reach the point where the A:/ floppy would be obviated by a CD rewrite burner, but I'm very close to making that a reality. Love it as an all-around backup of photo folders, My Documents, and all the rest.

I bought Plextor because they are in this business for long time, and I am happy with the product.
I opened the box and plug into my labtop using USB 1.1 and created a data CD. I was surprise by how quick it burned.
Not a single problem. I also liked the softwares in the package.
Very useful and friendly.

I purchased this product to use with my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop at home. I use Windows 98SE, 128 meg ram. This product works flawlessly. It took less than five minutes to install. Just load the driver first from the included CD, and then follow the instructions to connect it to your computer. The computer recognized it instantly and the installation was done. Truely what Plug and Play should always be! The unit is solidly built, and will take a lot of use. I would not recommend it for someone looking for a unit to carry with them however. It would be too heavy for that. Within 20 minutes I was making both audio and data CDs. (I use Easy CD Creator which is easy to use and will also convert audio to MP3 and then you can burn your MP3's to CD's for a permanent library.) For ease of use and a well made product, I can't recommend this product enough.
