I ordered this Plextor external DVD/CD to replace a two year old Plextor that had served me well, but finally died a graceful death. I didn't consider any other brand, and wanted a Plextor external with both USB and Firewire. Although more expensive than comperable drives, the PX810 matched my requirements. It is similar in function to my older Plextor, and is somewhat sturdier and quieter---both welcome features.

My only disappointment is that the PX810 doesn't function with PlexTools software. I had used PlexTools as my main CD and DVD duplication program because it's simple, works very well, and has zero cartoon character icons and other annoying silliness found in most other CD/DVD programs.

I wasted several frustrating days trying to get Plextools to work with the PX810 before contacting Pextor Tech Support. They responded quickly, but with sad news. The PX810 isn't supported by Plextools, and never will be. So I am stuck using Roxio and similar horrors to make my discs. All that aside, the drive seems to be a suitable sucessor to my old drive.

writes dvd out of the box on usb. can't ask for more that that. i use nero v7. unless you use roxio or want to use roxio don't load it.

very good value for the price. money well spent. plextor 810 is a wonderful and sturdy external burner. i no longer have coasters like i did with my other burners. highly recommended. might even buy a second one.

A few days after the 12-month warranty expired, so did this drive.

It was also the first Plextor drive I've ever seen that made coasters.

I used to tell folks to buy nothing but Plextor, but now I'm not sure.

This is a great addition to my PC. I use it to record and convert the many home movies I take of my 15 grandchildren to DVD. Fast, easy to operate and compatible with a majority of the software and DVD recording media found on the market today. I highly recommend this drive to anyone wanting a fast and reliable DVD burner.

I'd read negative reviews on other sites claiming that this drive is frequently bad out of the box. Having heard good things about the drive being jitter free for precise ripping of audio, I made the purchase and regret it. The drive motor was completely dysfunctional right out of the box, making grinding noises, etc. Can't recommend this drive. I have a feeling that the engineering is good but the QA is bad.

Vista cannot find or work with this. That was the reason I bought it but both of my vista machines do not find the drive?
