If you're like me, you've read all the hype about upgrading to a Solid State Drive (SSD), but were worried that your older motherboard couldn't take full advantage of the potential speed improvements and held off on buying one. Well, your worries are over. Regardless of whether your SATA bus speed tops out at 6 or 3 Gbit/second, this drive doesn't care, and beats the pants off either one because it doesn't need your SATA bus! Instead, it plugs into any available PCI Express 2.0 X2 slot. Everything you need is built right into the card. You don't even have to install driver software! When I plugged this device into my motherboard and rebooted, it popped right up as an unformatted 256GB hard drive.

You will want to boot your system off this drive, so I recommend that you spend an extra $20 for Paragon's SSD migration software, which makes it MUCH easier to transfer your operating system from your older (and presumably higher capacity) mechanical hard drive to this SSD while excluding your large data files. After copying over your operating system, you will need to delve into your BIOS settings and designate the Plextor as your boot drive. If you don't know how to do this, please consult with a knowledgeable friend because you can really bork up your system if you aren't careful.

If you're running Windows, it will most likely prompt you to reactivate because it will not recognize your new drive and assume it's been installed on a different system. I was prompted to call a Microsoft 1-800 number and enter a bunch of long numbers into a dialog box, but it really wasn't a big deal, and I was up and running again very quickly.

As for "all the hype" about upgrading to an SSD - it's true! This thing is awesomely fast!

This M6e is very fast. When I was building my new system, I already had in mind that I would go w/ Plextor SSD. After reviewing all their models, I decided on this PCIe-based SSD, and it didn't disappoint me at all. Loading time is so fast now. Highly recommend to anyone looking for SSD. Go w/ Plextor!
