This EP is admittedly a radical departure from the style found on Metric's recent full album Fantasies (one of my favorite albums of the year). While Fantasies' songs were shimmering and bursting with energy, the songs on Plug In Plug Out are more soulful and reserved. If Fantasies was a night out at the club, Plug In Plug Out is a night spent at home. However, I would argue this is not a bad thing. Admittedly, few artists can pull off turning a solid, energy filled song into an equally enjoyable acoustic version (i.e. any acoustic attempt by the Ting Tings). However, Emily Haines appears to be the exception to the rule. Her lovely vocals deliver a ton of heart, a fact which was sometimes masked in the pure energy of Fantasies' songs. The acoustic versions of these songs on Plug In Plug Out bring out the more sweet and soulful aspects of Haines, and provide a different but equally enjoyable take on them. The only real throw away is Twilight Galaxy, as that song had a fairly sparse arrangement to begin with, and thus this version has little to differentiate it from the version found on Fantasies. However, the EP as a whole is solid and I would recommend it.

Album Highlights: "Gimme Sympathy" and "Help I'm Alive"

Unlike the previous reviewer who didn't like the acoustical versions of the songs from Fantasies, I love them. To me, Metric bringing out these songs in this genre gives the songs a more personal feel. Emily's voice in these versions get to shine in a unique way, and I just love the simplicity of the music.

You can get a feel from the sample of each song provided, but I think once you give that a listen you will want to purchase this reasonably priced set. To be honest, I wish they would have provided Plug In, Plug Out as a a complete acoustical version of Fantasies, just as a counter balance. I would have bought it.

Looking forward to the concert in Charlotte on November 27th!!!!! :)

A few months back, I went into Boston for a free concert, Metric being the main draw. After waiting through the first few acts, Emily Haines and her guitarist stepped onto the stage, played a few songs and announced that it was to be an all-acoustic set. I was disappointed enough to leave. The feeling with this album is the same (though at least this time it was expected). Everything just seems to fall flat. The energy is barely noticeable. It's a shame too, because these are all songs I enjoy a lot. You just lose so much when you take away such a huge part of what made me like them in the first place.
