There are a lot of great post processing software out there nowadays, onOne being one of them, which leave Photoshop for the pros. I am an active amateur though and dreaded post work until this new breed of consumer friendly tool came to play. The big problem I found are all the instructions are online. There's nothing like reading a book when learning how to use them and this one is done in laymens terms. Real nice. Thank you Nicole S. Young

I got this book as a learning aid for OnOne's Perfect Photo Suite 7
(PPS7). While there are dozens of training videos, I wanted a hard copy
book that I could highlight, use as a reference and use to complement the
training videos. This book exceeded all of my expectations by clearly
detailing the tools, panels, settings, etc. in PPS7. In addition, it
explains the fundamental concepts of photo editing (layers, masking,
brushes, etc.), which greatly helped me, because I am new to photo editing.

PPS7 can be a standalone application or a plug-in to other photo editors.
One negative is that the interface to Lightroom, Photoshop and Aperture is
explained, but the interface to Photoshop Elements is not. This is a minor
point and I definitely recommend this book.

This is a well written and well illustrated book for onOne Software. The author does a good job of writing to all levels of experience in post-production photography and blends in processing examples at the end of most chapters.

OnOne software is an interesting photo editing software as it functions as either a plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture and Photoshop Elements as well as a stand-alone application. It provides some excellent tools to improve and simplify post-production editing of a person's images. The author of this book explains what each tool in the suite does and how to use them. Some of the more challenging tasks (like removing and replacing backgrounds) are explained clearly enough that it is highly likely a person will be able to accomplish these advanced tasks after reading the appropriate chapters. This is a huge compliment as many books have tried and failed to explain how to do this. There is also an excellent chapter on layers which is a mystery for many people.

I would suggest that if you decide to invest in the onOne Software suite of products, that you not only purchase this book but use the on-line tutorials provided on the onOne web site. OnOne Software seems to be a company geniunely interested in providing quality products and support - also a big compliment as many companies today do not place a high-value on after-sale service after they get your money.

A nice companion to onOne Software is NIK Software. They also offer an excellent suite of products which help compliment the tools provided by the onOne Suite. With NIK, however, just be a little cautious as they have been purchased by Google and there is some concern among NIK users about Google's commitment to on-going improvement and support as Google purchased the company chiefly for their smart phone applications. The tools are still excellent, however, and definitely something to consider investing in.

I am one of those strange people who do not find it easy to learn off a video screen so my pet hate are Software creators who put their software into the market without documentation. Yes, some do produce videos but inevitably they skim the surface. OnOne has been around for a number of years but I have never felt able to give the time to try it out to the fullest extent so that I can adequately exploit it.

To now find a book covering the use of the software is marvelous and already I realise how much more creatively I can use the software.
We all owe Nicole Young a vote of thanks for taking the time to explore the software so thoroughly.

I do not read a software manual from A to Z but rather dip into it to learn how to carry out a specific procedure. So far I have found it hard to use this book in this manner and is the reason I have not awarded 5 stars. Nicole's language and mine are not the same at this juncture and mean I will have to put more energy into understanding the processes she describes. But I am glad to have it in my library.

The book is well written and explained but the problem I have is that nowhere can I find access to the images used in the book.
Although there is a statement in the book to 'work alongside the author' I find that impossible if one cannot use the same images as the tutorials. Otherwise there will, or may, be different results and how can one know if it's because of the subject image or not applying the steps in the tutorial properly.
Imagine a maths teacher explaining a problem with the student trying to follow along on a different problem.
Too many publishers lack the foresight to include access to the same images as used in the tutorials.
Hopefully, even after much searching, I have missed somewhere where these tutorial images are available.
I would be happy to be proved incorrect.
P.B.

I first heard of the onOne Plugin Suite when it was in version 1. It sounded like a very interesting digital darkroom tool. Perfect Photo Suite is now in version 7 and includes all seven of the products offered by onOne Software. Most exciting is that it now installs as a standalone application as well as a plugin for Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture. While there are an abundance of excellent video tutorials available online from onOne free of charge, I really love learning from books. And so, at last, Plug In with onOne Software by Nicole S. Young has been published.

The book is divided into nine chapters. The first covers the introductory topics common to most of the modules, program installation, navigating the interface, opening and saving images, as well as working with presets and batch processing. The last chapter, Perfect Integration, is a series of guided tours where you process images using a variety of the suite tools. Chapters 2 through 8 detail each of the Perfect Suite modules following a basic format. The module interface is diagramed, followed by recommendations for when and why you would want to use the tool. Then you get a detailed explanation of every button and slider. Each chapter ends with wonderful step-by-step tutorials.

The Modules
Perfect Layers: In addition to adding layers capability to Lightroom and Apature, this module serves as the umbrella for the standalone application, encompassing all the other modules.
Perfect Mask: Facilitates creating selections and compositing images. Simple to use once you know how, and this chapter completely explains the tools for and the process of extracting objects from an image.
Perfect Portrait: Portrait retouching may be subtle or extensive, depending on the subject and shooting conditions.
