  • Expand USB connectivity by adding up to seven USB 3.0, 2.0, or 1.1 devices to any USB 2.0 or 3.0 capable computer. Fully plug and play, devices can be hot-plugged, supports USB over-current protection. (see in the description below for more information on smart charging abilities) (US AC Wall Outlet Plug, 100-240V 50/60Hz)
  • Compatible with most Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X, and Linux / Unix systems. On Microsoft Windows systems the latest manufacturer USB 3.0 host controller drivers and Windows Updates need to be installed to ensure compatibility. Apple Mac OS X and Linux / Unix systems require latest operating system updates for best compatibility.
  • Apple notes: Some devices such as the Apple SuperDrive look for Apple-specific signaling and will not work when connected through any USB hub. Not recommended for use with USB 3.0 PCI-e add-on cards for older Mac Pro systems because of limitations in their software support for USB 3.0 hubs.
  • Hub supports the USB Battery Charging 1.2 Standard (BC 1.2) for unique charge and data sync functionality that most hubs do not have. See in the description below for more information. Charge and sync only works with BC 1.2 compatible devices such as the Apple iPhone and iPad (Apple 30 pin dock connector iPads will not charge), plus various Android and Windows devices are also supported. Not all devices support BC 1.2 charge and sync functionality.
  • Supports USB 3.0 transfer rates up to 5Gbps (640MBps). Transfer rates are device and USB host controller dependent. Backwards compatible with all USB 2.0/1.1 devices and hosts. Sleek piano black UV protected glossy finish. All 7 ports on one side to minimize cable clutter and maximize accessibility. 7 blue status LEDs, one per USB port.

Product Description

Plugable's Mainstream USB 3.0 Hub

The Plugable USB3-HUB7-81X expands USB connectivity by enabling up to seven USB 3.0 or 2.0 devices to be added to any USB 3.0 or 2.0 capable desktop, laptop, or tablet computer. The hub supports USB 3.0 transfer rates up to 5Gbps (640MBps) to allow data to move quickly between devices, ideal for high-throughput devices such as USB external hard drives, flash drives, and USB graphics adapters.

A port for everything

Most computers have an average of only 4-6 USB ports. With so many devices we depend on daily, that's just not enough. All seven ports are lined up front and center to allow easy insertion of devices with the power and host USB cable coming out the rear to reduce cable clutter.

USB has become more than a way of connecting devices to a computer with plug and play ease and high performance, it has also become the method of choice to power and charge a huge range of portable battery-powered devices like cell phones, tablets, USB battery packs, handheld game consoles, e-readers, e-cigarettes, cameras, smart watches, fitness trackers, bicycle lights, and many more.

Some of those mobile devices have adopted proprietary mechanisms to draw more power than USB was originally designed to allow which has caused confusion about charging but is now being solved by the USB-IF (USB Implementers’ Forum) Battery Charging (BC 1.2) standard.

It's not just a hub, it's also a 2-port charger

The HUB7-81X is a USB 3.0 hub that does everything existing USB hubs do, while also supporting the BC 1.2 charging standard on its two edge ports (1 & 7). It's a no-compromise solution for both gaining extra USB ports and for charging the newest generation of BC 1.2 compliant devices.

When a BC 1.2 compliant device is attached to one of the two edge ports it can charge at a faster rate (up to 1.5A vs 500mA of a standard port).

Both charge-and-sync CDP (Charging Downstream Port) and charge-only DCP (Dedicated Charging Port) modes are supported along with support for other proprietary charging signals (Apple 1A, 2A, 2.4A, and Samsung 2.4A) when being used as a stand-alone charger, with no host computer attached, if the attached device also supports these modes.

USB 3.0 compatibility
The HUB7-81X features two internal VIA Labs VL812 B2 USB 3.0 hub chipsets with the latest 9095 firmware for maximum forward and backwards compatibility between nearly all USB 3.0, 2.0, and 1.1 hosts and devices.

The VIA Labs VL812 B2 USB 3.0 hub chipset is a 3rd generation solution which emphasizes high performance and high power efficiency.
Included with the HUB7-81X is a robust 25W (5V, 5A) UL certified power adapter with a removable 6 foot power cable (standard IEC320 C7) that fits US, Canadian, and Japanese AC wall outlets. In addition the power supply supports 100-240V at 50/60Hz. With an AC outlet adapter (not included) it can be used worldwide. Also included is a 3 foot/1m USB 3.0 A to B cable to connect the hub to the host computer.
  • The hub itself requires no driver installation (although individual devices may require drivers). Supports Microsoft Windows 10 through XP, Mac OS X, and Linux kernels 3.0 and later.
  • Installing latest USB 3.0 xHCI host controller drivers is recommended. This hub is not recommended for use with older Texas Instruments, Fresco Logic, Etron, or Wistron USB 3.0 host controllers.
  • Older Mac Pros with USB 3.0 PCI Express add-on cards may not work with this or any USB 3.0 hub.
  • The Apple SuperDrive is not compatible (see Apple HT201788).
  • 2.4Ghz wireless devices such as keyboard/mouse receivers, Bluetooth and WiFi adapters, may not work in close proximity to USB 3.0 devices or hubs.

The assortment of USB devices that we encounter today is amazing, and as the amount of them continues to grow, we often need to find additional way to connect them to our computers and notebooks.

The Plugable 7 Port USB 3.0 Hub with 4A Power Adapter is a solid solution to this issue, and because it's fully USB 2.0 compatible, it offers an excellent upgrade path for those who are not yet using the USB 3.0 standard. Many USB 3.0 cables are shorter to support faster 5Gbps specification, so this hub allows closer placement to your PC or Mac.

● Likes:

+ Has 7 USB 3.0 ports; backward compatible to USB 2.0/1.1 standards
+ 5Gbps data transfer; up to 10 times that of USB 2.0
+ Excellent laptop-style power supply; rated at 5V-4A
+ Separate 2-prong power cord; doesn't waste wall space
+ Charges some USB devices when computer power is off
+ Has 7 blue LEDs; illuminate only when USB port is active
+ Full OS support; Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, others

● Dislikes:

- Could use an on/off switch, but not critical
- Needs four stick-on rubber feet so it doesn't slide on desktop

● Setup:

This 7-port USB hub comes in a neatly partitioned cardboard box, and it's easy to open. Inside you'll find the Plugable 7-Port USB 3.0 Hub, which measures about 6¾" x 2¾" x 1" and weighs under 6½ ounces. It comes with a hefty USB 3.0 type B cable that's 40" long, and has a standard male USB plug on the end to plug into the computer, and the other end plugs into the hub itself.

This item received October 6 2013. Stopped working Jan 19, 2014. If that's what you like about a product (hardly any life span) buy it.
At around $35 each that's only $100 a year. What a bargain. (That is, if your dumb enough to buy a second one.)

UPDATE After I wrote this review I discovered that one of the ports on this device had shorted out. When I separated the wires causing this, the product began working again, minus the damaged port. In the meantime, the company contacted me and offered to replace the device once I explained what I had found. They did this very quickly, and even thanked ME. So I think anyone who buys this can rest assured that should any problem occur, the company stands behind its products 100% and will bend over backwards to fix it.

I am not a techie but I will explain the product. First, you require a 3.0 USB port on your computer. Plug the hub into your computer and you now have (7) 3.0 ports for about $5 each. Just about any device which requires 2.0 or 3.0 will run on these ports without interfering with any other device. Also, contrary to a desktop it provides greater convenience for plugging and unplugging devices when not using them..

This hub is powered, meaning it must also be plugged into 110 AC. I have found that the advantage to that is it supplies a stronger power source than my computer. I have a device that will not run on a 6' cord between the device and computer, but it will run on the same six foot cord between the Plugable and the device. So all in all I vote for it. Because this is an update, Amazon is not letting me change the stars but I would give it 4.

For the record, I am using Windows 7 64 bit for all tests. Utilizing a USB 3 "Super Speed" port on a Dell E6530 laptop with 8 GB RAM.

Ease of use: You can't get much easier than this. You open the box, you remove the USB 3 hub, the USB 3 cable and the power adapter from the box. You plug the power adapter into the wall, the power adapter into the hub and then the USB 3 cable into your USB 3 port (can also be used on a USB 2 capable USB connection, just realize you cannot obtain USB 3 speeds from USB 2 ports). Plug your USB devices into the hub and voila! Windows sees them.

Speed: If you have USB 3 devices, from the couple of simple tests I ran, you won't notice any speed difference, or minimal difference, with the device plugged into the hub.

Here's how I tested:

USB 3 port on E6530 Dell laptop

With these devices plugged in/used:

USB 3 capable Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STBV2000100
USB 1 Microsoft Intellimouse 5 button
USB 2, powered by USB, Maxtor external HDD
USB Multifunction printer

All of the devices were recognized quickly and easily by Windows. The hub was found first then all of the other devices jumped on.

In terms of speed, I didn't notice any issues with any of the devices connected.

With all of these devices connected, I decided to test the speed of copying files on the hub and off.

3.65 GB folder from USB 3 drive, connected directly to the laptop, multiple files, folders and different file sizes and types: 42 seconds
