(US AC Wall Outlet Plug, 100-240V 50/60Hz)
  • Compatible with most Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X, and Linux / Unix systems. Microsoft Windows systems should install latest manufacturer USB 3.0 host controller drivers and Windows Updates. Apple Mac OS X and Linux / Unix systems require latest operating system updates for best compatibility.
  • Apple notes: Note that some devices such as the Apple SuperDrive look for Apple-specific signaling and will not work when connected through any USB hub. Not recommended for use with USB 3.0 PCI-e add-on cards for older Mac Pro systems because of limitations in their software support for USB 3.0 hubs.
  • Supports USB 3.0 transfer rates up to 5Gbps (640MBps) to allow data to move quickly between devices. Transfer rates are device and USB host controller dependent. Ideal for high-throughput devices such as USB hard drives, flash drives, and USB video adapters. Backwards compatible with all USB 2.0/1.1 devices and hosts. Powerful 5V 4A 20W UL certified power adapter.

Product Description

Connect up to four USB 3.0, 2.0, or 1.1 devices to a single port on any computer. Attractive piano black, solid feeling, compact design with 4 green LEDs (one per USB port) for diagnosing connectivity.

Compatibility

Featuring the VIA VL811+ USB 3.0 hub chipset updated to firmware version 9095 for maximum compatibility with almost all USB 3.0 hosts. Supports Microsoft Windows 8.1 through XP, Mac OS X, and Linux kernels 3.0 and later. Apple SuperDrive not compatible. Older Mac Pros with USB 3.0 PCI Express add-on cards do not work with this or any USB 3.0 hub. Full forward and backward compatibility between USB 3.0, 2.0, and 1.1 hosts and devices. Not recommended for use with older Texas Instruments, Fresco Logic, Etron, or Wistron USB 3.0 host controllers. Requires no driver installation (although individual devices may require drivers). 2.4Ghz wireless devices such as wireless keyboard/mouse receivers, Bluetooth and WiFi adapters, may not work in close proximity to USB 3.0 devices or hubs. Connecting wireless devices to a USB 2.0 port is recommended for best results.

Power and Charging

Comes with premium 5V 4A 20W power supply for supporting several devices requiring USB 3.0's more demanding 900mA per port power. All four ports provide new, advanced compatibility for devices which support the new BC 1.2 charging standard: charging and syncing ("Charging Downstream Port" or CDP mode) at up to 1.5A per port and dedicated charging with only the hub's power adapter and no PC attached ("Dedicated Charging Port" or DCP mode) at up to 2.4A per port with dedicated Apple 1A, 2A, 2.4A, Samsung 2.4A, and Android charging signals.Charge and sync only works with BC 1.2 compatible devices such as the Apple iPhone 6, 6+, 5s, 5c, 5, iPad Retina, Air, Mini, (Apple 30 pin dock connector iPads will not charge), plus various Android and Windows devices are also supported. Not all devices support BC 1.2 charge and sync functionality.

This 4-port USB 3.0 hub works great.
Dana
The products have great designs, feel sturdy and solid, work flawlessly, and show that the quality goes in it before the name Plugable goes on it.
Gargoyle
As far as operation of the hub: It worked the first time, and has worked every time I have used it over the last week.

UPDATE.
Plugable contacted me to let me know that the short power cord shipped with the hub was due to a packaging error.
They shipped me a replacement power adapter with a 69 inches cord.
This hub now deserve 5 stars so is Plugable customer service, kudos.
I am now completely satisfied.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This hub works wonderfully, no problem to hook-up or power any USB2 or 3 device.
Just one big disappointment, the power cord shipped with the hub is ridiculously short so you HAVE to have the power strip on the desk.
This is a real short coming, by saving a foot of cheap cord they made this hub a looser.
It would be 5 stars if it would not be for the cord.

It works, however it was slower, by 4x, than expected (only marginally faster than USB-2). I now use a direct connection from computer to my LACIE (usb-3) backup drive.

On 3/9/13 I modify the above comments:
I first tried using my Plugable USB-3 hub-from Amazon, transferring 36GB mixed data(including 2 full backups plus photos, etc, etc.), via usb-3 cable-it took a long time. I got Plugable 4-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0/2.0 Hub with 4A Power Adapter a transfer speed of ~12-15 MB/sec.
However, on consideration of that hurried evaluation and a question from someone, I did a screen capture of the data tonight. I couldn't reproduce that low speed on different, large sized data, [13GB], and dont have any other unique large files I want to play with anymore. I got 41-45 MB/sec transfer, which is probably all one can expect for this transfer (computer to Hub to Lacie). (dont know which limits/sets this speed-my hard disk, or the Lacie, or the Hub. But its fine. Other similar sized (or smaller files also transfer as fast. Dont know why first transfer test was slower, but its not reproducible now. I wasnt going to say anything at all, but Amazon sends these evaluation forms repeatedly, I retested and got results above(~40MB/Sec).
I am now happy with the Plugable hub. I will change the low rating, if I can find my previous rating on Amazon. I will give it a 4-5 star rating currently. Only inconvenience is that its a very small light-weight unit with no clips or mounting holes, and literally floats in the air on its stiff USB-3 cables, but I can live with that.

Surprisingly small and compact. The supplied high quality USB 3.0 cable was adequately long for my purposes. Truly "plug and play".

I tested data transfer speeds through the hub and they were right up there with speeds when my external HDs were connected directly to a cable from my computer. Also, my external drives still go into idle / sleep mode after X minutes of no use based on my setting in Control Panel / Power Options. So for me, using this hub and connecting devices is just like the hub wasn't in the chain and that is GOOD.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ... FIRMWARE / BIOS UPDATE FEATURE: This hub has updatable / upgradable firmware (BIOS) which is a really nice feature. You can read about it and download the install utility here:

[...]

Copy and paste the link above into your browser URL bar.

You just download and install a small utility. The zip file you will download to obtain the update utility has a PDF that clearly explains the entire process very nicely and it is really easy.

The firmware shipped on my unit was version 7.4 and the upgrade / update took that to version 8.80. All quick and easy, you will just need to reboot your computer after you install the utility and before you run the utility to actually update. So nice .. keeps your gear up to date very easily.

Plugable support are excellent, and they offer a firmware upgrade from the stock 7.7.0.0 release to 8.8.0.0. I've bought two of these so far, including a unit in frankly awful packaging from "Amazon Warehouse", and apart from some scuffing and scratching on the badly-packaged unit, both units seem to be performing well. I haven't tested them on the shipped 7.7.0.0 firmware, and you shouldn't, either. Like all other USB 3.0 hubs apparently sold on Amazon at this time, these units are powered by a VIA VL710 hub chipset. And, like many other USB 3.0 (and VIA...) products, these apparently needed a long time to mature.

The key differences between these and lower-rated USB 3.0 hubs on Amazon:

*) A full 4-amp adapter, also quality.
*) Better QA acceptance testing, apparently.

I've bought other Plugable-brand USB gear, and plan to buy more.

Aside: The one problem that tends to haunt a lot of USB 3.0 gear at this time is a lack of driver updates: everything is either Renesas-powered if it's a host adapter, or VIA-powered if it's a hub. With Plugable offering a recent VIA firmware update, that leaves drivers and firmware for the host adapters.

There appeare to be two generations of Renesas host controllers on the market at the moment: one with 2.x drivers and 3.x f/w; and another with 3.x drivers and 4.x f/w.

Intel's download site has very nearly the latest drivers for the former (2.1.27.0 at time of writing, 2.1.28.0 current), if you hunt, with 3.0.12.0 apparently the most recent for the next-gen controllers. Current controller f/w are 3.0.2.8.0.8 & 4.0.1.5.0.2. There are a variety of sites out there offering latest and nearly-latest drivers. Search engines are your friend. Just be careful what you download.
