Product Description

Upgrade Windows or Linux based desktops with two additional Super Speed USB 3.0 capable ports.

System Requirements

One free standard or low profile PCI Express x1 slot (package includes brackets for both). Renesas µPD720202 chipset fully supports the latest XHCI 1.0 standard for maximum compatibility and reduces power consumption so supplemental power is not needed.

Operating systems

Drivers for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (32/64-bit) included on CDROM. Drivers built in to Windows 8 (no install required). Not compatible with ARM-based Windows (MS Surface). Open source Linux support which recognizes this card is present in kernels 3.4.10+. Mac OS X is not supported at this time.

Performance

Theoretical maximum speed of USB 3.0 is 5Gbs and PCIe 1x is 4Gbs. Practical speeds vary by device, but the current generation of devices usually won't exceed 2 Gbps.

In the box

PCIe x1 card, driver disk, and both standard and low profile brackets.

the sales literature and installation literature do not mention this. if you have a newer computer with a SATA power supply, then you will need an adapter consisting of a male SATA power plug on one end and a LP4 Molex 4 pin female plug on the other end to power up the card with at least 5vdc It will probably need to be at least a foot long to function in most computer desktop cases. if you have an older computer, all you will need is a pigtail from the computer power supply that has a LP4 molex plug that will reach the card

I ordered this card along with the Plugable SATA to USB 3.0 Hard Drive Dock (reviewed separately). The items arrived quickly (fulfilled by Amazon and I have Prime). I placed the card in a motherboard slot in my Windows 7 64-bit PC, plugged a USB 3.0 external hard drive into the card, and issues immediately appeared. I contacted Plugable's support via e-mail, and they responded very quickly. Over a week's period of time, we corresponded daily via e-mail, sometimes more than once per day, as we tried to resolve the problem. They even sent a pre-tested replacement card to me via Priority Mail in case the original card was defective. The replacement card would not work properly either. They put a lot of time into researching the problem. They even requested copies of some of my Windows logs. They looked through these logs for error messages to try to determine the cause of the problem. (These logs had 1,000's of entries, so it must have been time-consuming to look through them.)

In the end, the problem turned out to be related to the motherboard PCI Express slot into which I had installed the card. I moved the card to a different slot and it works perfectly.

I am not exaggerating when I say Plugable's product support is the best I have ever encountered. As far as the product itself, the card is working fine and is operating at the expected USB 3.0 speeds (with USB 3.0 drives of course). It works fine with USB 2.0 drives as well. I also have an ASUS U3S6 USB 3.0 card in the system. I paid quite a bit more for that card (and it is now discontinued and no longer available). The ASUS and Plugable cards are currently both in my system and there is no conflict between them.

This PCI Express USB 3.0 is easy to install. It took me less 10 minutes to install the card & the Windows driver included.
I ran a comparison test on a desktop PC (3 year old HP mc8227c, 3GB RAM) and a laptop (Thinkpad w510, 8GB RAM). I copied a folder with 6.8GB files (around 20 files, the largest about 1GB). The write/read transfer rates on USB 3.0 are around 40MB/second & 80MB/second; USB 2.0 20MB/second & 40MB/second; So if you decide to buy this card, you should expect this card is twice as fast as a USB 2.0. If you expect it to be 10x based on technical specifications, it is not realistic. Good luck with your purchase.

I was reluctant to give this product 3 stars but after some wrangling, it does, in fact work. Let me explain.

When I pulled the package out of it's shipping container, the packaging was pristine. Encouraging. I removed all of the tape and seals and open the package and everything seemed in order, so I proceeded with the physical installation, and that is where the ease stopped.

I went to install it into my PCI-e slot, and it did not fit. So I tried another slot, still no dice. I got to looking at the face of the thing and noticed part of it was a little bent, no biggie. I got some pliers and adjusted it and tried again. This adjustment got me closer, but I could still not get the thing installed, so I ended up completely removing the faceplate and taking my pliers to it again. The angle between the attachment nubs and the actual face should have been 90 degrees, but this was about 95 degrees, just enough to where it wouldn't fit right. So I fixed this issue and, imagine that, it just slid right in! Now we're in business, right?

No.

I went to plug in the SATA power(with the supplied adapter mind you) and it didn't fit. I thought I was just being dumb at first, but no. The male terminals on the card were too big for the female slots on the supplied adapter. This problem was easily fixed by boring out the slots with a small screwdriver. I wouldn't have thought I would have to do this much work for a plug and play type of project, and what should have been a 5 minute process turned into being an hour long ordeal.

Moral of the story: be careful when buying from these guys, and be prepared to bust out some tools.

This product must work for some people. It uses the inudstry-standard NEC Renesas USB 3.0 chipset. However, in my 64 Bit Win7 environment, Blue Screens of Death (BSD) were all I saw once this card was installed. Perhaps I just had a defective card?

The card initially installed OK - sort of. Be sure and load the driver CD first - BEFORE you put the card in your machine. This is what is called for in the driver's README.TXT file, but is different than what is found in the Chinese-translated hard-copy manual included with the product. Following the hardcopy manual's instructions results in a BSD as soon as the device installation completes. Following the README.TXT instructions at least gets the device driver installed. and allows the computer to boot with the card showing up in device manager clean.

Once the card was installed, all looked good. Then I connected a brand new USB 3.0 Western Digital Hard drive....and a BSD. I removed the card, and attempted a connection to the drive using USB 2.0 (on board my original computer). My USB 2.0 drivers (native to the original computer) were no longer working. I was unable to format the drive using USB 2.0.

A little Google-Fu, and I found that the Plugable USB 3.0 driver had corrupted by USB 2.0 drivers. The fix was to uninstall one of the USB 2.0 Host Controler devices using Device Manager. They are then automatically re-detected and the USB 2.0 drivers are re-installed properly. This allowed me to format the drive using USB 2.0.

Not one to give up, I attempted to re-install the USB 3.0 card. First, I downloaded the drivers directly from the plugable.com website, then powered down and installed the card. Upon boot, all looked good. Then I connected the drive to USB 3.0 and (you guessed it!) - BSD.
