Product Description

Featuring DisplayLink's DL-125 USB 2.0 graphics chipset, the Plugable UGA-125 enables multiple monitors with any laptop or desktop (one adapter required per monitor, up to six on Windows). Most people use it to gain a third or fourth monitor for their laptop. You get the full benefits of USB, including plug and play connectivity, thin and flexible cabling, and ability to connect via USB 2.0 hubs and repeaters. Multitask with a dedicated monitor for each document or application.

Performance

USB graphics adapters work by rendering 2D/3D with your computer's CPU and GPU, and then compressing and transmitting the pixels that change over USB. Dual core or 2Ghz or better CPU recommended. Recommended for web and applications, not 3D gaming or motion video playback.

Connectivity

The adapter package includes the main USB 2.0 to DVI-I adapter, a USB 2.0 cable and hardware adapters for the different connector types (DVI-I to VGA/D-Sub and DVI-I to HDMI). HDMI connections are graphics only - this adapter has no audio function. Supports monitors and PC-compatible TVs up to 1440x900 or 1280x1024. Powered via USB and the adapter has an LED indicator light.

Drivers

Windows 7/Vista/XP drivers installed automatically via Windows Update. 32 and 64 bit supported for both Vista and Win7. Microsoft's low-end Vista Home Basic and Win7 Starter Edition disable multiple monitors and are not supported. GPU is used for 2D/3D rendering on Windows, requiring Intel, nVidia, or ATI primary WDDM driver. Mac OS X 10.4+ Intel 32/64-bit supports up to 4 USB monitors with driver v. 1.7 or later (available at Plugable website). Lion users must upgrade to 10.7.2 for OS fixes (OS X 10.7.3 not recommended). Open source available for Linux and other platforms. Linux requires xorg.conf editing (advanced users only). USB graphics devices with different chipset drivers (MCT, SMSC, DisplayLink, etc.) should not be mixed on the same system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm, August 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Plugable UGA-125 USB 2.0 to VGA/DVI/HDMI Adapter for Multiple Monitors up to 1280x1024 / 1440x900 Each (DisplayLink DL-125 Chipset) (Electronics)
I bought this adapter to connect a third monitor (1280x1080) to my iMac with 2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor and OS X 10.6.4. I downloaded the OS X driver from the manufacturer website, installed it, restarted and connected the monitor. Works just great and delivers a great picture. On more reason to like this adapter is that it comes super complete with adapters for VGA and HDMI and a USB cable. Given the fact that Apple takes 30 Dollars just for a Mini Displayport to DVI adapter (which, of course, you can also buy here at Amazon for $10) I find the $50 that I paid for this USB adapter a reasonable solution to connect another monitor to an iMac.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow...it works great, October 22, 2010
This review is from: Plugable UGA-125 USB 2.0 to VGA/DVI/HDMI Adapter for Multiple Monitors up to 1280x1024 / 1440x900 Each (DisplayLink DL-125 Chipset) (Electronics)
Bought it online at Amazon for under $50. Plugged it in and Windoze recognized it immediately. I added it through the standard display GUI and was up and running in less than 5 minutes and have had zero problems with it. I don't run games or anything with high speed graphics - mostly spreadsheets and static data. For my purposes, it works absolutely great and doesn't slow down my laptop at all. I have 3 monitors total - 1 laptop - 1 external to laptop and 1 via DisplayLink.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't always work, January 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Plugable UGA-125 USB 2.0 to VGA/DVI/HDMI Adapter for Multiple Monitors up to 1280x1024 / 1440x900 Each (DisplayLink DL-125 Chipset) (Electronics)
I have this hooked up for a double-monitor and when the computer goes to sleep, the second monitor doesn't always come back on when I move the mouse or press a key to wake it back up. I end up having to unplug the USB from the back of the computer and plug it back in for the screen to come on. It's great when it works, but it doesn't work all the time and that's frustrating.
