Product Description

Use your HDMI TV as an extra display, even with older PCs and laptops without a built-in HDMI connector. This adapter adds HDMI connectivity via any available USB 2.0 port. Enables a single HDMI cable to carry both USB graphics and USB audio to your HDMI TV or monitor with speakers, or other HDMI audio/video receiver. Uses USB graphics chips and drivers from DisplayLink and standard USB audio drivers already built into Windows.

Requirements

Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, or later required, with 2 Ghz dual core or better CPU recommended. Mac and Linux are not supported at this time. USB graphics devices with drivers from different chipset vendors (MCT, SMSC, DisplayLink, etc.) should not be mixed on the same system.

Performance

Sets modes up to 1920x1080 (1080p), however we recommend users set manually set Windows to 720p (1280x720) or lower for best video playback performance. Above this mode, framerates will be limited by the USB 2.0 connection.

Included in package

Main HDMI adapter unit, USB 2.0 cable for connecting back to PC, driver CD, and quickstart guide. Assumes use of a standard HDMI 19-pin male connector between adapter and TV (HDMI cable not included).

After researching USB display adapters, reading reviews, and having great interactions with DisplayLink support, I felt that this USB2-HDMI-165 was the best board available for displaying HD video, recorded via Hauppage in up to 1080i, from my laptop or another PC at a distance from my widescreen TV.

DisplayLink support indicated that display of 1080i video may be marginal because of the USB bandwidth. I figured that though only progressive outputs are available, only differences from the previous frame are sent through the USB line, so without de-interlacing, the bit rate should be nearly the same as that for 720p, which IS recommended.

Installed on my main 3.4GHz i7-2600 workstation, which is unfortunately nowhere near my HDTV, this board performed flawlessly, including while displaying 1080i full-screen video in its 1080p mode (into one of my monitors that has 1920x1080 resolution and an HDMI input). I was very impressed.

However, installed on my 1.83GHz dual-core laptop, the USB2-HDMI-165 failed miserably. The first time I tried, I got horrible video flashing even at 720p and with the video in a small window. Other times, the display would just hang once a video window was moved to it. I had similar experiences with a 2.4GHz PC also near my TV. Then I noticed that, though each PC could display the 1080i video on its own high-resolution screen, the CPU was nearly pegged doing so.

Here's my conclusion: The DL-165 chip in the US2-HDMI-165 does the magic of translating the compressed USB signal that it receives into the HDMI signal for the display. It and USB 2.0 are quite able to keep up with the bitrate of 1080i video coming from a 10 mbps stream.

All the usual shipping and packaging was completely hassle free. My main problem with this device was not because of the product itself - it does what it says it does: plug it in, update some drivers, and voila! PC on your TV that actually looks reasonably good. What this will not do is make up for a graphics card that's not up to the task of running HD video on one screen and your PC stuff on the other. HD quality movies were choppy and unwatchable. The bottom line: This is perfectly suitable if you just want a simple way to connect audio and video to your TV, but if you wanna bring your digital movie collection to the big screen, or stream HD content from netflix, you may have trouble. If your PC does not already have an HDMI out, chances arew it doesn't have the graphics card to handle that king of signal. Ultimatly, I ended up buying a new PC with the HDMI included, and I couldn't be happier. This thing is in a box in my closet.

I wanted to connect an HDTV to my laptop. It has S-Video output, but I wanted the higher resolution and simpler connection (no separate audio cable) offered by HDMI. With this Plugable device I have the higher resolution but no sound at all. I contacted technical support but after a week no response other than that they're working on the issue. . . . After posting an earlier version of this review, a technician sent me an email. They had been waiting for my response to an inquiry asking which model I had purchased. For some reason my response to that inquiry had not been received. Nevertheless, without waiting any longer for my response, Plugable sent me a brand new adapter plus more info about setting up the sound. I am happy to report that the sound problem has been resolved and on the whole the adapter is working well. Clearly the technicians at Plugable wanted to help, but I doubt that they have ever received any of the follow-up emails I sent. So: good hardware, eager customer service, but a breakdown in communications somewhere.

I bought this to connect a laptop that does not have an HDMI output to a new HDTV. First, let me say that the intructions are really lacking with this item. I plugged the device into my Windows 7 Dell laptop and Windows immediately installed the correct software. It took me a few times to figure out the proper settings for what I was trying to do. Basically, you want to set the resolution for 720p for video and set the HDTV up as a duplicate of your laptop. Once I got the settings right, the device worked perfectly as described: I had an exact copy of my laptop desktop on my HDTV with sound. I played some videos on YouTube and they looked and sounded perfect--not jittery or choppy at all. Haven't experimented with higher resolutions, but I highly recommend this for someone who needs to connect a non-HDMI laptop to their HDTV.

I have an all-in-one pc which does not have HDMI port. I wanted to extend my monitor to my LCD TV so I need something that convert from USB to HDMI. I'd looked through many items before I found this plugable USB to HDMI. The item doesn't require additional power. I can just plug the cable to my USB port, connect the HDMI cable to my LCD TV and then WOW! The picture quality is excellent. This little box allows you to transfer the audio as well. Sound quality is fine. Great way to extend your monitor with audio in a reasonable price.
