Book Description

January 15, 1997
Rudy Grigar, one of America’s most notorious characters of saltwater wade-fishing, lends the inimitable voice of experience to these yester yarns of the coastal waters of Texas and Louisiana. A fisherman’s fisherman, Grigar claimed to have caught more than a million pounds of fish in his sixty years along the coast. Yet fervent and abiding concern for those waters spurred his commitment to a catch-and-release policy for all fish under three pounds and to Gulf Coast conservation. His tales and tips are the bible of those now wading the Plugger’s favorite spots.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Plugger: Wade Fishing The Gulf Coast is the fishing memoir of Rudy Grigar, one of America's most notorious characters of saltwater wade-fishing and a "must" read for anyone with a longing for the inimitable voice of experience and magnetic yesteryarns about fishing the coastal waters of Texas and Louisiana. A fisherman's fisherman, Grigar has caught more than one million pounds of fish in his sixty years of saltwater fishing. Yet fervent and abiding concern for the environment spawned his inviolate catch-and-release policy for all fish under three pounds, and spurred him in the late seventies to help foster the Gulf Coast Conservation Associations, which has now become forty thousand members strong. Ably edited by W. R. McAffee, Plugger is packed with Grigar's tales and tips and details of the lures he's fashioned for seventy years. Plugger is the ultimate saltwater wade-fishing text for the Gulf Coast waters and great reading for land-bound armchair angler as well! -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Autobiography, June 5, 2001

This review is from: Plugger: Wade Fishing the Gulf Coast (Hardcover)
Don't read this book to learn how to fish the Texas Gulf Coast. While there are morsels of fishing knowledge to be learned from the book, it is more an autobiography of a man who has devoted his life to something he loves. You will be treated to Rudy Grigar's opinions of almost everything, and whether you agree with them or not, you will come away from the book wishing you could meet Mr. Grigar. Written in a plain style, you quickly develop the feeling that with the author, what you see is what you get. I'm sure he is the kind of person I would enjoy spending the day on the bay with, and I'm glad he took the time to share his life with his readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for coastal wade fishermen., May 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Plugger: Wade Fishing the Gulf Coast (Hardcover)
"Plugger" was written by a fisherman for fishermen. Rudy epitomizes the word sportsman and is not afraid of offending overly sensitive people by expressing his opinion on issues such as gill netting and poaching. He offers sound advice to those not familiar with fishing the gulf coast and invaluable tips to those fortunate enough to fish those same waters but lacking in his years of experience and observation. Rudy has retired from guiding so reading "Plugger" is as close as you will ever come to fishing with the legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, March 9, 2004

This review is from: Plugger: Wade Fishing the Gulf Coast (Hardcover)
Agree with the other reviews that this is not a "how to" book, it's primarily a biography. However, this guy is a fishing legend & I learned plenty. Found Rudy's life completely fascinating; what a character! His story explains much about what's happening today on the Texas Gulf Coast & why. Entertaining & educational... doesn't get much better than that. Could hardly put the book down. Highly recommend it.
