Editorial Reviews

At the age of sixteen, Italian born Guido Ponzini began studying the electric bass. He is a graduate of the CPM Music Institute in Milano and since 2002, has studied contemporary and world music with renowned producer Giovanni Amighetti. As a Chapman Stick and bass player, Guido worked with many musicians on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. He has also played with musicians Ayub Ogada, Guo Yue, Joji Hirota and Adel Salameh. As a composer, Guido's pieces have appeared on television, in theater and the Nintendo Europe event, Wii Music Live. Plugin Contemporary Music is the first classical-contemporary concerto for the Chapman Stick. It is composed and played by Guido with violinist Angela Benelli (Roma Sinfonietta) and double bassist Jean Gambini (Nicola Piovani). Ponzini plays Uematsu features pieces from the famous Japanese composer, Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), where Guido plays the Viola da Gamba and electric bass.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Youth Are Revolting!" October 26, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Sorry! That's a stale old joke, and right away I need to state that this music is anything but revolting to hear. Honestly, the only thing revolting about the Youth is that they're so much younger than I am. Guido Ponzini was born in 1985, making him roughly 26 at this time. His favored instrument these days in the "Chapman stick", a variety of electric guitar played entirely by hammering the strings with the finger tips, but he alos plays nearly anything with strings, including a plucked viola da gamba. Most of his studies and collaborations have been with "non-classical" or "post-classical" composers and ensembles, including Chinese flautist Guo Ye, Kenyan Ayub Ogada, and Japanese composer Nobuo Uematsu, who has specialized in music for video games. One has to suppose, I suppose, that young Guido thinks of himself as being "in revolt" against elite and orthodox classical music as performed in those big gilded reformatories called concert halls. I don't know. I haven't met him. Perhaps he doesn't have an ax to grind against the "establishment". But his audience appeal is clearly to the earnest ones among the Young who are interested in contemporary sounds and extensions of the "pop" idiom into greater complexity and intensity. That probably sounds more condescending than i want it to be. Guido Ponzini is the real thing, the whole package, a virtuosically adept performer.

However, as I listen to this CD, I can't help thinking that it's less revolting, i.e. less revolutionary, than Ponzini intends it to be. Or perhaps not, perhaps Ponzini knows perfectly well that almost nothing in his own or in Uematsu's compositions is terribly original.
