A Very Interesting and Misunderstood Piece of Israeli History, September 5, 2010
I picked this book up for a quarter at a book fair and thought I'd give it a try. I was thinking it was along similar lines of "Vengeance" by Jonas or "Voyage of the Damned" by Thomas but tended to have a bit of the authors political bias within, which is entirely expected. The Plumbat Affair is a well written depiction of how the State of Israel managed to attain its nuclear deterrence over its enemies within the Middle East with the very astute and creative workings of Israel's Secret Service: Mossad. Operation Plumbat was an Israeli covert operation in 1968 to obtain yellowcake (processed uranium ore) to support the Israeli nuclear weapons effort.
France stopped supplying Israel with uranium fuel for the Dimona nuclear reactor after the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. In 1968 Israel managed to obtain 200 tonnes, 560 metal barrels labeled "Plumbat" containing the yellowcake shipped out of Antwerp to Genoa for a European front company by transferring the ore to another vessel at sea. This Mossad covert operation violated Euratom, the ECC toothless Nuclear Agency, which is supposed to control the nuclear materials within the small European Economic Community, former to European Union.
The mossad's operation, like many others: "Operation Thunder" which was the rescue from Entebbe, "Operation Solomon" which was the rescue of black Jews from Ethiopia or "Operation Magic Carpet" to rescue Jews from Yemen show the scope and breath the Mossad's intelligence workings can handle. The capturing new technology from enemy nations: Russian planes sold to Iraq or the 1983 Iraq Nuclear facility to the finding and abduction of Adolf Eichmann half way around the world was an amazing feat especially from a perspective of a new country, without technology, without allies, without money and really without any real power aside form its creativity to solve problems. The fact that Israel could find and abduct Adolf Eichmann in such a limited position places a very real perspective and questions onto the American government, arguably the most technologically advanced, wealthy, powerful and productive nations this Earth has yet seen concerning their being "unable" to find bin Laden after 10 years of "War on Terror". In a strictly comparative Israel - USA and Eichmann - bin Laden one can very logically place the inability onto highly suspect anti-American/West political agenda and vast government corruption.
In any event Operation Plumbat took Israel out of the field of the continual arms race with the Soviet/Chinese backed Arab nations in conventional warfare which, as hindsight being 20-20, has only proven the validity of Israel's nuclear deterrence. Many may cater to political opinions of the day but the astute and the more open minded to grounded research would refer back to the history of the region. How the lands passed from peoples to peoples, when and why. The Jews: Judeans are the indigenous peoples of the areas of the British Mandate called "Palestine" as the Arabs: Arabians are the indigenous peoples of the Arabian peninsula further to the South East. The facts surrounding the entire issue, especially combined with globalism's: realpolitik, Islam's history and concept of Jihad/Dhimmitude and the multi-millennial ignorance surrounding antisemitism have molested any clear view of this sad conflict. Mainstream media today has, a long time ago, abandoned any real semblance of journalistic integrity and have become simple pawns in the dialectical political process of "Left" vs. "Right" agenda rarely telling the truth until either forced to or years later forced to for some other reason.
The Plumbat Affair is a good little read but I think must be read with a sound understanding of Israel, Jewish and non-Muslim history to gain full appreciation towards the decision making process of such - some consider questionable - leaders within Israel's government, their reasoning or rational behind and the entire working of Operation Plumbat by Israel's Mossad.
Although I found it a worthy read, I do feel that had the author been better informed on the respective issues, histories of those involved aside from the basics, but still a very worthy read and expected considering the 1978 publishing. Israel itself was founded on the "Left Wing" platform of the enlightened Humanist, Socialist, Collectivist and Racialist theories encompassing European academia and the Mapai Party of the time of its foundation which culminated into its' own "Affairs": "The Ring Worm Affair" or the "Kastner Affair" as told by Ben Hecht's fabulous work "Perfidy". I think for a formal understanding I'd suggest the following authors on specific subjects: Jewish History - Paul Johnson, Judaism - "Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism" by Dennis Prager, The Arab-Israel Conflict - Joan Peters, History of Non-Muslims in the Islamic World - Bat Ye'or, Islam's Jihad and its view of Jews - Andrew Bostom, Islam and Islamic history - Robert Spencer or Ibn Warraq and the history of the "Jewish" anti-Jewish movements - "To Eliminate the Opiate" by Antelman which is comparable to the various "Christian" anti-Christian movements. Happy Reading...
