Book Description

November 28, 2006
What’s the big new phenomenon, with legions of devotees? Making lovable stuffed monsters! Influenced by the popularity of Japanese animé and video game culture, urban illustration and design, and the do-it-yourself craft movement, these designer plush toys are everywhere—even museum stores. Yet they’re simple to sew. Just take fabric, a needle and thread, and stuffing, combine a touch of cuteness with a dash of utter weirdness, and you’ve got one of the oddest, most irresistible creatures ever. And these 30+ projects—including furry, green-lipped Monkey; Greggles, who sports a coif of tentacles; and flirtatious Polly, who has her three eyes on every guy—are as much at home in a trendy loft studio as in a child’s room. They’re unabashedly handmade, but bold, colorful, and very modern. A thorough Basics section provides all the fundamentals, from fabric selection to stitches to the ins and outs of the construction process. And, as a bonus, there’s a handful of profiles of select plush designers with photos of their work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not full size patterns November 29, 2006
By meowy
Format:Paperback
This book is really cute, very creative! It's put together well and provides tons of inspiration along with many cute patterns.

However the book I picked up did not have full size patterns. It is required to copy and enlarge the patterns if you want to make the projects in the size the book gives dimensions for. The patterns are usable as they are to make tiny versions of each of the little creatures though.

Just wanted to comment since I purchased the book based on the full size pattern comment and was a little disappointed to see that they still needed enlarged to do the projects in the size stated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for plush monsters!! December 22, 2006
Format:Paperback
This book is fantastic, bustling with imagination and creativity. It gives you patterns to create these weird little monsters yourself, or ideas to make your own creatures. I'm just learning how to sew, and its not the best book for beginners. You have photos of the toys, lists of materials, and patterns in the back of the books, but if there are any odd pieces, it doesn't really show you how to put them together. Additionally, you have to enlarge the patterns when you copy them, and it doesn't list what size. Other than a couple of negatives for the beginner, I highly recommend this book! I've been very entertained trying to put some gruesome googlies together!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun with sewing December 21, 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imaginative and adventurous sewing, great projects to share with family ( mother/daughter projects). Quirky enough for preteens/teens and environmentally friendly, several projects are made with recycled clothing and/or materials. Anyone with a sense of humor would love one of these projects as a gift. The templates and ideas keep you thinking and planning more sewing projects. Great idea!!!!

My daughters like that the patterns are enlargable. You can make your creature any size you like. They have made mini plucky chickens that turned out really cute. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile, if only for inspiration
Plush monsters are wonderful. You can make dozens of mistakes while making them and at the end of the day you can pretend that they were all intentional. It doesn't matter. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars BOYS TOYS
Finally a book of toys that include something for boys. Curiously original designs, this book has that something just a little left of center.
