2.0 out of 5 stars Outdated software No custmer service, January 10, 2008
This review is from: Plustek Opticfilm 7200 I Ai Isrd 7200DPI Silverfast Ai (Electronics)
I purchased this scanner in December 2007 expecting that it would include the current release of SilverFast Ai scanning software. When I got the scanner, I found that scanning color negatives was unsatisfactory because of excessive color cast. I went to the Silverfast website to see if the problem was corrected and discovered that the version of Silverfast included in with the scanner had been replaced with a major upgrade in December 2006, a full year before I purchased my scanner. Silverfast advised me that a upgrade from the version 6.4 that came with the scanner to version 6.5 (the December 2006 version) would require $40. All my efforts to contact Plustek have resulted in no response. I did download the version 6.5 demo and it did solve the color cast problem. I have not decided if I will keep the scanner or not. The scans are good. Dust and scratch cleaning is very slow and not always effective. If you have a lot of old negatives and slides, you may find a scanner with Digital ICE a better bet for dealing with dust and scratches. VueScan (another scanning program) works well with the scanner.

Update 24 Jan 2007

I finally reached Plustek by phone (no 800 number) and talked to a helpful real person. They provided the updated Silverfast version 6.5.

The scanner produced nice scans. Scanning old color negatives with Silverfast still results in color casts that must be cleaned up in Photoshop. IR cleaning slow and not as good as produced by my now dead scanner with Digital ICE. I purchased Vuescan and the scanner works very well with it. Minimal color casts with negatives. All in all I'm pleased with the scanner. If you're having trouble scanning color negatives do a Check out colorneg at http://www.c-f-systems.com/Plug-ins.html and you'll find useful info.

I would now update to 3 stars.

The scanner was easy to install and seems to be working OK after downloading the newest driver. The color for both film strips and slides is not as good as the same pictures scanned with my HP Scajet G4050 when compared to Prints I have from the same film strp or slides. Working with LaserSoft they think the scanner needs to be calibrated but I don't have the target to acomplish this. Hopefully this will resolve the problem so batch copying will work as it should.

The scanner works as advertisied. I'm scanning 20 years of family photos from various 35MM sources (slides, negatives, simple cameras and SLRs). I bought this model rather than the SE to get the included silverfast software. My advise now and what I did was to scrap the silverfast software and buy vuescan. Much better software package for what I'm doing. Installing the drivers only from the silverfast disk requires some thinking but it's not difficult. The one step buttons are disabled but I never used them anyway. You can also scan 110 negatives but is takes a while.

My bottom line advise is buy the SE model and download Vuescan.
