Learn how Pluto lost its ninth planet status and was dubbed a dwarf planet!, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Pluto: From Planet to Dwarf (True Books: Space) (Paperback)
In every "True Book" there are two true or false questions in the front. Only one of them is true and you'll have to read the entire book to find out the answer, but naturally you'll have a great time doing it. When your parents were growing up, they were taught that there were nine planets, but astronomers, using their up to date technology and telescopes, decided otherwise. Pluto is a dwarf planet. There are only eight planets in our solar system. Once you read about it in this book you can stump all kinds of grownups when you ask them the number of planets or ask them to name them!
Pluto is approximately "3.6 billion miles (5.8 billion kilometers) from Earth." This dwarf planet, unlike earth, has no oxygen and is very cold. No spacecraft has ever visited this far away place, but a ship called New Horizons is scheduled to arrive there in 2015. Perhaps then many of our questions will be answered. In this book you will learn about our solar system and Pluto's place in it, the climate, how it rotates on its tilted axis, scientific theories about it, how astronomers proved it was not a planet and its moons. Did you know that "one year on Pluto equals about 248 Earth years?" There are so many interesting facts you can learn in this book!
This is one of the more interesting True Books about planets, or in Pluto's case, a dwarf planet. This series of books will fascinate the reader and nudge the young space cadet to read even more. In this book there are informative sidebars, full color photographs, illustrations, interesting facts scattered throughout the text, an index, important words, statistics and additional recommended book and web sites to explore. Who discovered Pluto? Guess you'd better read this book to find out!
