5.0 out of 5 stars Vanessa is too deep
From the lines of one song on "Zipless", Vanessa sings"My love is too much". She could not have been more correct. Vanessa Daou is beyond herself, she delves deep into worlds untouched as she does on this CD. "Plutonium Glow" grew on me the more I listened to it until the songs became memorable. Vanessa Daou is beyond herself, she delves deep into worlds untouched as she does on this CD. "Plutonium Glow" grew on me the more I listened to it until the songs became memorable. Vanessa Daou is no doubt the sexiest singer in the world. Put this CD on when you are in the mood for seduction and for taking on the world. I love all of the songs but "Make Believe" really gets me going! Long live the Daous!

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely cosmic!, June 24, 2002

Contrary to what some reviewers have said, this album DOES have an intriguing underlying theme, blending cosmic, out-of-this-world imagery with the sensuality that Vanessa has mastered so well. Perhaps this "sci-fi" edge alienates some listeners, but I understand it and find it utterly entrancing. It's her most unique effort to date - right up there with "Make You Love" on my list of favorites. Try "Life on a Distant Star" and let your mind trip the intergalactic light fantastic!

Alright, I love Zipless too, it is probably the best of Vanessa's music because of the tie to her husbands Aunt Erica Jong's poetry and stories, so let's get that out of the way.

This CD is really good. The lyrics are fun and the music is right up there with the best the Daou's put out. Lot's of great hooks, Vanessa's breathy vocals, and good production make this a very enjoyable CD. If I could rate as such, I would give it 4 1/2 stars in comparison to 5 for Zipless.

If you have started to wear Zipless out, listen to the track snippets above that Amazon provides. Try Make Believe, How Far, Life on a Distant Star, and Peculiar. Mouth to Mouth could fit right in on Zipless. Make your own decision. I think Vanessa fans will love this CD - I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vanessa is an Electronica Goddess, November 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Plutonium Glow (Audio CD)
This album deserves an overall ranking so much higher than 3 1/2 stars!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Vanessa - have all of her CDs as well as any other Daou recording that I have been able to find. Every one of her albums is a classic, and this one is no exception.

This CD is a little bit heavier on electronica influence than some of her other albums, which seems to be a point of contention for some reviewers, but it is still Vanessa through and through. It is sexy, ethereal, and trip-hoppy to the nth degree. I love Vanessa, and I love all things trip-hop and electronica, so this one leaves me in absolute heaven. One my favorite songs, "Alive" is on this album. It just sends shivers up and down my spine and sets my skin on fire. I love her voice, it always feels like she is wispering directly into your ear. Yummy!

This entire album is a masterpiece, like all of her other albums. Check out the tracks "Alive" (of course), "Make Believe", "Mouth to Mouth", "Cherries in the Snow", and "How Far" and you'll get the idea.

Also check out (and immediately purchase) all of Vanessa Daou's other albums including "Zipless", "Slow to Burn", "Dear John Coltrane", and "Make You Love" (my favorite album), as well as any other Daou recordings and singles that you can get your hands on.

Sit back, close your eyes, and fall into bliss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peter and Vanessa create yet another masterpiece, November 18, 1998

I first became familiar with their work when I saw the video for "Black Forest". I was so taken by the song that I went out that day and bought the CD ZIPLESS and have been a fan ever since. Plutonium Glow once again proves that they are the masters of sultry, sexy, and seductive music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trippy, hippy, and sexy, but a little too abstract, May 10, 1999

While PG succeeds on the trance levels, it's a little too disconnected from any sort of root anything that the listener to can hold on to.

It's a good effort, however. The music has an appropriately ethereal quality that emphasizes the abstract nature of the lyrics.

I much preferred and recommend Vanessa's first release, "Zipless," which had a more solid feel without sacrificing the air.

After "Slow to Burn", which had a solid sense of mood from beginning to end, and "Zipless", which had a novel musical take on poetry, "Plutonium Glow" was kind of a let down. I listened to it straight through with my headphones tight against my head, and the mood was just not really there, those breathless Virgin Island visuals...and the instrumentals were fairly thin compared to the richness of "Slow to Burn". Haven't heard Dear John Coltrane yet, but this album has kept me from purchasing it right away.

Later listen:

Now where was I in 1992 that I wouldn't have discovered Plutonium Glow? Landing on Planet Grunge to plant the flannel flag?

Or was it 1962? In a Mercury capsule taking the first giant leap toward the Sixth Star this work deserves?

And where was I when I wrote the below? It went right by me. Each and every song blasts me off ... and now I'm even more Lost in Space than Dr. Zachary Smith.

Earlier Review:

See, the thing with Vanessa, is that each album has some good songs that lull the listener into a nice groove of easy going complacency ... but then she kicks in with a Life on a Distant Star or a Zero G and you're on the floor in abandoned tears or doing the big sigh for weeks on end.

At those moments, she transcends the music itself. A rare magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lay Me Down In Plutonium Glow, July 30, 2008
This review is from: Plutonium Glow (Audio CD)
In 1995 MCA underwent signicant management changes at this time Vanessa Doau nogotiated out of her contract and chose to release her records independantly. Plutonuin Glow was one of the earliest albums released by a former Major-label artist to be marketed AND sold via the internet. However while not as commercially success as "Zipless", "Plutoniun Glow" does superceed "Zipless" in many respects. In 1997 "Plutonim Glow" boldly ventured into Electronica using heavily synthized sound and imagery to produce an sexually powered and ethereal backdrop for the album. Prior to 1997 Madonna did release "I Want You" featuring Massive Attack which was comercially accepted warmly, Electronica would again be introduced into maintream pop by Madonna's 1998 release of "Ray of Light." Understanding that the nature of Electronica being disconnected and unemotional makes Plutonium Glow unique in the Vanessa Daou successfully connects these qualities creating a sexually emotional charged and successful project in itself. It is easily one Vanessa's hard won accomplishments in the 1990's and worthy contender for anyone who is a serious collector or media buff. This is a serious piece worthy of anyone's collection, and while many can not resist comparison to her previous work, Vanessa Daou has always remained a relavent to her work and in 2008 Plutonium Glow has not aged and still fresh and crystallizing to the listener.
