A Plymouth Cloak is a type of cudgel, not a garment, and in this historical mystery it is the murder weapon that bludgeons to death the king's messenger. The action (and this story is filled with action) takes place in 1473 and involves the carrying of an important letter from King Edward IV to France. Ric Jerrom is another of Chivers's first-rate narrators, an actor with a pleasing voice and an ability to enliven a tale. His characterizations are plausible without being overdramatized.
