Read the book, took the test, and here's my review,
By gnomic (Mid-Atlantic US) - See all my reviews

PMP Exam Prep is an invaluable study aid for passing the PMP. Highly recommended.I've been an IS project manager for over 10 years. I've studied Kerzner's book (good, but tedious) in preparation and the PMBOK, but took no courses or workshops. I studied PMP Exam Prep for 10 days immediately preceeding my exam. Read the book about 3 times. I took the test in 4 hours and got 168 of the 200 question correct. I think that the "study tips" in the book helped me get about 15-20 questions right that I might have otherwise missed. (your milage may vary) However, the book said to expect about 6 "math" questions and I had about 15. (All of which I got right) About half of the questions I missed were due to the test's wording which is tricky. The book made me a bit more confident than I should have been, but is the best such book that I've come across. Expensive, but worth it especially if you haven't taken a review course. Good focus on PMI-isms (things important to PMI and passing the test that your experience as a PM may not help you) Also recommended: Principles of Project Management. With PMBOK, Principles, PMP Exam Prep, and the requisite 7,500 hours of PM experience you should be able to pass the PMP. Kerzner's book will also help if you have the time to read through it. Good luck!

Mulcahy PMP exam prep book review,
By Shannon Gaw (Roswell, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I actually used both the second and third edition to prepare for the exam. This book helped me in passing the PMP exam, but it certainly was not the self-proclaimed panacea that I had heard about. The formatting and presentation of the book were less than professional, but some of the comments and tricks were right on. I would recommend purchasing the book; however, for the $(...) purchase price I expected better formatting, presentation, and proof-reading.

Surprisingly effective!,

This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I have to admit that when I first received the pricey 'Exam Prep' I was disappointed by its format (amateurish) and what seemed to be, at the time, shallow content. I also felt that the sample questions were scarce and essentially designed to lure you into buying the practice CD. However as I started to study for the PMP exam I felt that the book was very effective and a much needed complement to the PMBOK. It went straight to the point, told you what was important to memorize and what was not, and gave you some valuable tricks for the test. It rapidly became my 'cliff notes' for the PMBOK. Bottom line it found that the book was surprisingly effective and despite its high price tag, it ended up being worth every penny. I would stronly recommend it to anyone who is preparing for the PMP exam.

I passed the test because of this book!!,
By Cynthia C. (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I passed the PMP exam in March, 2001 after using this book, and the PMBOK. I followed the study guidelines exactly as laid out in the book. The test is somewhat more difficult than the tests in the book, and of course, there are the trick questions, but you will go in a lot more confident if you can study the way Rita recommends. This books points out "PMI-isms" to watch for, and that helped me a lot. I only studied about 50 hours for the exam over the course of one month. I did no other reading than this book and the PMBOK. I have been a project manager for about 6 years and I had to make sure I didn't let my real life experiences and other training I had previously cloud my thinking as I studied - another thing this books warns you about. I recommend this book very highly if you want to pass the PMP exam.

Great tool to prepare for the PMP!,
By Patrick Keenan (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I used the PMP Exam Prep (2000 edition) as one of my primary study tools to prepare for the PMP exam. I studied about 10 hours per week over the course of 3 months and passed the exam in February. I did not take any formal training classes. The book helped me quickly identify the areas where I was weak (Earned Value, Network Diagrams) and needed to drill on. By the time I went through the book for the third time, I felt really confident in my ability to pass the PMP. There are lots of great tips and tricks in the book that help you to identfy the most important areas for you to focus on.I also used the ESI practice exams and CDs and found them useful. The ESI practice exams were remarkably similar to the questions on the exam. I highly recommend Rita Mulcahy's book!

Best Workbook for PMP,

This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
Rita's examples are easy to understand, especially her explanations and worksheets for earned value. She reduces complex concepts into easy to understand tenets that are needed to pass this highly subjective test. She teaches you how to think like the PMI thinks!Exceptional book. As a PMP instructor, I always recommend this workbook to my students.

If you are ready to prepare for the PMI PMP exam....you must purchase this book! It will provide the structure, information and insight that you will need to prepare for this complex exam. This book both compliments, and summarizes, PMBOK into an easy to follow study plan.

Well worth the price,
By Rochelle (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I just passed the PMP exam and it was largely due to the materials in this book. This book provides insight regarding the hot topics to know for the exam, what areas of the PMBOK are more important than others, tips and techniques for taking the exam and provides good supplementary information that you won't find in the PMBOK but is important to passing the test. I used this book along with the PMBOK and a few of the ESI materials and I feel the combination helped me pass the test on my first try. I highly recommend this book if you are trying to study for the test on your own (i.e. not taking any seminars or PMI work groups)...this really helps focus your attention on the major components of the test and gives you some insight about the test structure.

PMP Exam Prep,
By Donald A. Wilson (Jacksonville, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pmp Exam Prep (Paperback)
I was very confident in my knowledge of the PMBOK. I have close to 16 yrs PM experience. This publication filled a HUGE gap, relative to what was actually on the exam vs. what is in the PMBOK. Ms. Mulcahy's insite, exercises and practice tests got me there. I passed the PMP exam in November 2001.
