4.0 out of 5 stars A great CD from a band that should be HUGE, November 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pmr + 1 (Audio CD)
I heard of the damnwells a while back from a friend and finally got the chance to get the CD and give their music a closer listen. The songwriting on this album is amazing, and the vocals and music are superb.

This is music for fans of Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Bob Dylan, or Richard Ashcroft, and also for those who like true rock albums. Pick up ths record--you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I saw these guys open for Rhett Miller..., November 25, 2002
This review is from: Pmr + 1 (Audio CD)
... and I enjoyed their set more than his. I immediately bought their cd. The lyrics on this "poor man's record" are intelligent, and the music is original and engaging. They use many of the open-tuned, jangly chord sounds of Coldplay, but the lyrics and overall vibe of the songs are more similar to Wilco (Being There/Summerteeth). _Similar_ not derivative, mind you... The Damnwells explore time signature and song structure in ways that are entirely different from Tweedy/Bennet. Also, the Damnwells seem to have some small interest in India, with references to "Indian Bride..." and "...I think it was to India" as opposed to Wilco's Chicago. People may notice the drummer's, Steven Terry's, contribution to Wiskeytown's "Stranger's Almanac," but the band as a whole bears less resemblance to them than some reviews say. Also, the comparisons to Radiohead are missplaced. The only resemblance to Yorke et al. is that both bands make intelligent music. This said, buy the CD and support the band by going to see them live. They have a presence and an energy at their live shows that must be experienced, even when they are opening early for some other band and half the crowd hasn't yet arrived. You'll be glad you saw them so early on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, pleasant surprise, November 26, 2003

Caught them as an opening act for Cheap Trick and was blown away. Snatched up the cd and some autographs and still go "wow" everytime I hear it. So young... so good... so needing them to make MORE music. Restoring the faith that there is still something original out there.... buy it and be amazed.
