4.0 out of 5 stars A great CD from a band that should be HUGE, November 8, 2002

I heard of the damnwells a while back from a friend and finally got the chance to get the CD and give their music a closer listen. The songwriting on this album is amazing, and the vocals and music are superb.

This is music for fans of Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Bob Dylan, or Richard Ashcroft, and also for those who like true rock albums. Pick up ths record--you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I saw these guys open for Rhett Miller..., November 25, 2002
This review is from: Pmr + 1 (Audio CD)
... and I enjoyed their set more than his. I immediately bought their cd. The lyrics on this "poor man's record" are intelligent, and the music is original and engaging. They use many of the open-tuned, jangly chord sounds of Coldplay, but the lyrics and overall vibe of the songs are more similar to Wilco (Being There/Summerteeth). _Similar_ not derivative, mind you... The Damnwells explore time signature and song structure in ways that are entirely different from Tweedy/Bennet. Also, the Damnwells seem to have some small interest in India, with references to "Indian Bride..." and "...I think it was to India" as opposed to Wilco's Chicago. People may notice the drummer's, Steven Terry's, contribution to Wiskeytown's "Stranger's Almanac," but the band as a whole bears less resemblance to them than some reviews say. Also, the comparisons to Radiohead are missplaced. The only resemblance to Yorke et al. is that both bands make intelligent music. This said, buy the CD and support the band by going to see them live. They have a presence and an energy at their live shows that must be experienced, even when they are opening early for some other band and half the crowd hasn't yet arrived. You'll be glad you saw them so early on.

Caught them as an opening act for Cheap Trick and was blown away. Snatched up the cd and some autographs and still go "wow" everytime I hear it. So young... so good... so needing them to make MORE music. Restoring the faith that there is still something original out there.... buy it and be amazed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well, I'm proud, February 21, 2003

My favorites are Sleep Singing and The Trade. And I'm proud to say that being Alex's sister, I think I was the first lucky person to hear these songs when he played them for me over the phone. I'm just so damn proud. The thing about Sleep Singing is -I never hear it as a boyfriend -girlfriend kinda song, but it reminds me of what we all went though in NYC during 9/11, the first few lyrics are really chilling in that way. I dont remember if he wrote it before or after that. Anyway, buy this cd, you'll be glad you did.

I caught the Cheap Trick show in OKC and Tulsa very recently...In OKC-I missed the 1st opening band The Damnwells-but caught most of Wayne Kramer..But-in Tulsa-on 11/17 I was there very early and caught this little "known" diamond in the rough called The Damnwells...All I can say is wow! Being a part-time musician and full-time professional music enthusiast-I know true talent when I see it-ESPECIALLY IN ALEX! HE OWNS THE STAGE! At such a young age-he possesses the talent and drive to go very far in this strange music biz..No visible ego to be had-let alone..I am referring directly to the newest release "Bastards Of The Beat", which I immediatelly purchased after the set..IF YOU ARE A TRUE MUSIC ENTHUSIAST-DO YOURSELF A FAVOR..PLEASE!

I stumbled upon this album while doing some impulse music buying in a local record shop. It came very highly recommended by some of the clerks & I gave it a listen. I immediately bought it and have listened to it constantly since. I can't believe this band has had to make a "poor man's record" when a commercial release would be more beneficial for the band...at least financially and for exposure's sake. Nonetheless, I'm glad they could put this one together without all of the concessions I'm sure they would've had to make for a commercial record, just a shame it isn't longer. Plan on catching the New Orleans House of Blues show. Buy this if you like rock or for someone else who does.

5.0 out of 5 stars great stuff, December 31, 2002

I saw The Damnwells open for Longwave in Boston a few weeks ago, but I didn't have the cash to pick up their PMR (sad, because it was only 7 bucks at the concert). I was totally blown away. Their completely unpretentious, don't wear funny 1970's get-ups that seem all the rage in rock bands these days. They just seemed totally sincere (not precious or too earnest), and put on a hell of a confident show. Just straight up rock and roll with no distractions. Buy this thing and go see them if you can, becuase their live show has more up-tempo stuff that I guess they haven't recorded yet.

Heard it on KEXP Seattle. Bought it. Like it a lot. They have kind of a rock folk thing going but with more power behind. Buy it. I think there is a new album on the way too.
