Editorial Reviews

This double CD, taken from concerts in Japan and the UK in 2010 is Peter's first solo live recording since 1999's ''Typical'' and shows him at the peak of his powers, pushing and stretching both himself and the material into and out of shape. One CD is of Piano songs, the other guitar ones, following a matrix first laid down in the Tokyo shows. The songs are taken from the length and breadth of Peter's career and this release, documenting his solo performance style, is an important addition to his body of recorded work

This new live album is a very good, though imperfect addition to a PH fan's collection. The album consists of two CD's of solo performances recorded recently in the UK and Japan. The first CD is all piano and vocals, while the second one is all guitar and vocals (ergo the CD title). The material spans all the way from his first solo album, 1971's "Fools Mate" up the present. There are no previously unreleased songs. Some of the songs, like "Vision", "Modern" and "The Comet..." have been released in several live versions, but there are some interesting stripped down versions of "Traintime", "Ship of Fools", "Central Hotel" and "Faculty X", which are songs that I would not have expected him to do as acoustic solo pieces, but which definitely work. Also welcome are live versions of songs from his work in the last decade, including 3 songs from his excellent 2009 "Thin Air" album. The song selection and the performances are generally very good. One very nice feature is that he actually uses an acoustic piano for these performances. His choices in the sound of his electronic keyboards have been less than optimal at times in the past.

There are a couple of caveats to my recommendation, however. For one, as Hammill fans know perfectly well, PH's live performances often focus on expression and passion, rather than melody, which means his vocals get a bit harsh at times and his live performances might be an acquired taste for some. Also - let's face it - time is unkind to human vocal cords, and his voice, while still good, is not what it was, and that is evident in some rough spots.

2011 Nov issued from legendary singer/songwriter, Peter Hammill. PIANO GUITAR VOX is the name and the artist touches some material not heard for ages. A must for all those people who are bored out of their minds and have nothing better to do)
