Having just come back from Cairo, this Museum is by far one of the best museums I've ever been to in the world when it comes to artifacts and collections. However, it sucks for labeling of exhibits. And there's no photos allowed, so you're basically left to run around the Museum itself without a quality guide.
Enter the Pocket Book. I picked this book up at the Museum itself to help me remember the names and the major pieces of the Museum. Plus, since there are no photos allowed inside of the Museum, it helps me explain to friends and family what it is that I saw while in there. And it makes for an awesome book if you're into Egypt, the Pharoahs, the Pyramids or any of the historical things that makes Egypt a land of wonder - even just as a general reference book. There's a larger companion to this book, which is around $50. Both are excellent books, but the latter is more of a nice coffee table book instead of this being a pocket reference guide.

I reviewed this book and a larger one visiting the museum which is a bit more of a warehouse than a museum these days (new museum space is supposed to open in a few years). This little book will definitely guide you to the 100 or essential exhibits in the museum, some of which are very easy to miss. The book gives good text (items in the museum have no description), so it does give you a sense of what you are looking at.
I went to the museum twice, once for a quick wander as part of a large tour (we all broke up for the hour and a half we had) but then went back with this book and with a guide I hired in front of the museum (charged about $40 for a two hour tour). I talked with the guide first and asked him to tell me about a couple of things in the book (i.e., showed him a couple of pages) and he gave very good description way beyond the book touching on history and art (he was an older gentlemen with a degree in archeology). He really gave a good tour of the museum and the book was helpful to ask him some questions. PS Don't forget the Mummy rooms (cost more than the museum ticket itself but well worth it!)
