Book Description

This pocket book is for use by doctors, senior nurses and other senior health workers who are responsible for the care of young children at the first referral level in developing countries. It presents up-to-date clinical guidelines which are based on a review of the available published evidence by subject experts, for both inpatient and outpatient care in small hospitals where basic laboratory facilities and essential drugs and inexpensive medicines are available. In some settings, these guidelines can be used in the larger health centres where a small number of sick children can be admitted for inpatient care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful for International Work, October 23, 2010

This review is from: Pocket Book of Hospital Care for Children: Guidelines for the Management of Common Illness... (Paperback)
This tiny, portable reference is a godsend to those who are caring for sick children in lower-resourced environments. Readers of this review will likely use the book for work during a trip, it will also make a nice gift to local staff or students at the end of the trip!

Protocols for caring for sick children world-wide have been to a large extent harmonized due to the work of IMNCI. This book moves along IMNCI guidelines (which most western physicians do not have experience with) and so will be very helpful to keep your work and teaching in sync with local protocols.

The book is organized by larger categories (fever, diarrhea, severe malnutrition, sick young infants, HIV, etc.) and is helpful for diagnosing and treating many common problems. There is a formulary with doses in the back as well as a few helpful pictures of ways to use typically available supplies (how to use a supplemental nurser to feed a malnourished infant while stimulating breastmilk, how to place a chest tube and put it to water seal, how to recognize milliary TB on a chest x-ray).

Buy one for your trip and leave it there!

This little book is published by the World Health Organization. You can download it for free from the WHO web site. However it is handier in hard copy. The WHO succeeded admirablly with this book. It is an outstanding reference for a poor rural hospital with few resources. If you have any interest in 3rd world medicine this book is worth buying.
