I bought this book in hopes to provide me with useful information, to use in my work at a pediatrics clinic, we are in a very diverse neighborhood. It covers every possible nationality, with brief, very discript information, in an easy to look up format, I've brought it to work to share, and my co-workers, physicians, nurses and others are finding the information facinating as well as providing us with insights to the other cultures that we work with day to day.

This is an extremely comprehensive resource and I believe it should be in all reference libraries pertaining to pastoral care and hospital ministry. Organized by country, this handbook is an easy to use quick reference for the health care worker to access his/her patient's needs. The authors place emphases that the book is not to stereotype individuals or groups but to aid in the understanding of the cultural norms commonly attributed to them.

I was impressed that the book has broken down each country into; major languages, ethnic groups and major religions. It explains health care beliefs, eye contact and touch practices as well as birth and death rites and practices. Ethnic and race specific endemic diseases are categorized for each country. A simple search in this book before a healthcare worker encounters any new or unfamiliar patient will certainly aid in the evaluation of that patient.

This little book is a true gem!!! Written in a very user friendly format that any healthcare practioner or provider would be sure to appreciate!

The book is sorted by country in alphabetical order. Within each country section, there are numerous breakdowns as appropriate. Such subdivisions include: Map, Location, Major Languages, Ethnic Groups, Religions, Predominant Sick Care Practices, Healthcare Beliefs, Ethnic/Race Specific or Endemic Diseases, Families' Role in Healthcare, Dominance Patterns, Touch Practices, Perceptions of Time, Food Practies and Interances, National Childhood Immunizations, Death and Burial Practices, Rites and Rituals, etc....

Compact size, soft cover, and expansive data all make this book a necessity to any healthcare organizational library.

Thought I would add a current review for the Kindle addition. Everything as described except that the map images are not viewable on the Kindle. You are able to navigate via the TOC and the Index. Problem with the index is that you are not sure exactly what ethnicity you are being taken to because it indexes different areas as they are mentioned in the text, not just that particula ethnicity. You select the page #, then you must go back until you find your heading. It may or may not be the ethnicity you intended.

This is a must when working with a culturally diverse patient base. Can save a lot of time and headaches when caring for an immigrant population.

I ordered this item 8/5/10, it was supposed to arrive by 8/23. A few days after I was supposed to receive this item, I emailed the seller and asked if there was any tracking info available. The seller emailed me back and told me that a refund had been applied to my account. They seller said she went to the post office with the wrong book then realized they didn't actually have the book I ordered from them. I never received an email letting me know this book would not be delivered, and since the refund was on my credit card and I hadn't gotten my statement yet, I didn't know this book wasn't coming until it was too late to order a replacement for the assignment I had to do.

Handy guide to keep in the clinician's office. This is more of a reference than a must-read type of book. Nice addition to the library.
