I bought this item after researching the subject a bit. I was looking for something to put in my survival kit/bug out bag. (Do some research on the Federal Reserve folks!) I originally was going to buy the Coleman Fishpen or something similar, but I was convinced it would break too easily, and I bought this one instead.

I'm glad I did, and I think I'm going to buy a few more of them. I haven't attempted to catch a fish with it yet but I have practiced casting with it a bit.

Cons
The device is hardly pocket sized, maybe you could manage to stuff it in the cargo pocket of your fatigues, but putting it in the back or front pocket of your jeans just isn't realistic. It fits well inside a Crown Royal Bag with a few accessories and a roll of 20lb test line.

It takes a little getting used to and if you do it wrong the line can get tangled up inside the reel.

Pros
The device is sturdy for what it is. I've intentionally punished it a bit to test it. It comes with 10lb test line, and I have purposely caught the line on an immovable object and pulled. The line will break before the device.

You can get a good cast out of it, and it reels back in smoothly.

While I listed its size as a con, it is also a plus. While not pocket sized, it can fit in your glove compartment and countless other places your regular fishing pole can't.

The Price is Right!

I resently purchased 2 of the Ronco Pocket Fisherman for me and my girlfriend from Amazon and since I recieved them in October, 2009 I have made about 10 fishing trips and have caught lots of fish of various sizes. They work perfectly and are worth every penny.

I fish on the shores of our local beaches in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and the casting is perfect since I adjust the sinker to accommodate the heavy surf.

Where I fish there are lots of Permits & Croakers and they put up a real fight, the pocket fisherman has done its job so thus far... I would most definitely recommend this product to anyone with fishing as an interest.

I am planning on purchasing another for my son, who likes the feel of the Ronco Pocket fisherman.

The biggest fish I have caught was about 1 pound.

Bought 2 of these for when my mom and I go out on our motorcycles. It fits under the seat easily. I also found that you can cast in crowded areas(bushes trees)that a normal pole would never work in. My first catch I landed a 5lb bass on this tiny rod and reel and it handled perfectly. It isn't a top of the line product but, it works very well for what is it. Bought one for my dad as well.

I've been aware of this item for years and was skeptical. Actually it's very nice. I wanted it for my kayak .. Small and easy to take along. I was so pleased I bought a second one.

My husband talked about something he had years ago called the "Pocket Fisherman" and how he would fish with it on lunch hour or the way home from work. When his birthday was on the horizon, I started looking for neat gifts for him (he is so great at getting everyone else creative, unusual gifts). I remembered his compact fishing rod/reel and started looking. Lo and behold! I found it!! It is all ready to go: it has line on the reel and includes a bobber and a couple lures which fit inside. We took it over to the river, and while we fished, he regaled me with past Pocket Fisherman tales. He said he is going to store it with his "go bag". While it is not a state of the art fishing pole, it works well and he enjoyed it.

Oh man I wanted to give this a 5 star but can't. The compartment that holds the reel assembly keeps coming apart. The push button lock just doesn't have enoug tension to keep the door closed. I've had to stick pieces of duct/duck/gorilla tape to keep the door from opening. Other than that this is an awesome little caster. I supplemented the included hooks with a few smaller and larger hooks. Lovely casting, very smooth. Would recommend.

I love this fishing rod. It goes everywhere and can handle light nibbles to reeling in the big ones. Never would have believed it if I hadn't used it myself, so I gotta go ahead and recommend this item!
