4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for college, July 18, 2008

If you are going to take a 1st semester German course in college or High School then this is the dictionary that you will want to use. Most of the other books don't have have markings on the side of the dictionary to tell you the alphbetical order of the wods. This book has them. So, if you have to look up a word, like Der Zug, you can quickly go to the Z part of the dictionary instead of having to use an unmarked dictionary and then going - c,d, skip, skip, u, v, skip, y,z. In this book it's clearly marked so you can go directly to that part of the alphabet. This saves you time.

Honestly, this book is well set up and I used it in my German classes a few semesters. I liked it and thought that this dictionary did its job well. It gives a simple explanation of a word, like Volgel: Bird. So, you can cross reference it in the English section with ease. Easy is what you're going to want for your college German class. This book will help you get that necessary A for entry level classes. If you want to go past the first year of German then you will want a better book. However, this is a perfect first year German dictionary.

4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used to be Cassell's, February 2, 2003

This used to be part of Cassell's Contemporary Italian/French/Spanish/German series, which are now out of print. I have them all the they are the best grammar books I own. I am a language buff and own several grammars and these are the best! I had been looking for the Cassell's Contemporary Italian recently and discovered the Langenscheidt Pocket Grammars are the Cassell's Contemporary series in new editions.
