This review is from: A Pocket Guide to How to Hula for Body, Mind and Spirit (Paperback)
Of course a pocket guide will be small, but for a small book, this one is stuffed with information. Its not as good as an instructor, or a DVD where one can actually see the movements, but it does a good job for its medium.
Foot work such as the "kaholo" and the "lele" are mapped out via foot prints (like those mats for learning box-step) which is nice and clear. Hip work such as the "ka'o" and "ami" are line drawings and are much less clear. Then, basic hand movements are shown with photographs and simple lyrics printed beneath them, these are also easy to follow. The majority of the book is choreography to 7 "traditional" songs (post-Elvis era) so the movements can be practiced in context. There is a lyric sheet and a glossery. The down side is that you basicly have to memorize the first half of the book, which is pretty technical, before the choreography will be of any use to you. And there is no music to go with the songs. A supplement to your hula collection, but certianly not the ultimate resource.
