Book Description

September 1, 2003
This nutritional counter is an indispensable reference for anyone who is watching his or her salt intake. It is small enough to put in a pocket or purse to enable one to make wise food choices at the grocery store and while dining out. Intended for the estimated 60 million Americans with high blood pressure and severe kidney disease, this guide addresses which supermarket products and fast food items have the lowest sodium counts and simplifies supermarket choices by listing only low sodium products. Each food is analyzed by calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, sugar, and sodium. Also included are brief descriptions of each of these nutrients and their effect on blood pressure, explanations of food labeling guidelines, and clarification of nutritional content claims.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource and shopping guide, December 7, 2003
This review is from: Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods (Paperback)
Now in its 2003 edition, Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods by Bobbie Mostyn is a no-nonsense, but thoroughly "user friendly" informational pocketbook resource comprising more than 3,000 entries for generic and brand-name foods suited for low-salt diets. Each entry lists the estimated sodium content per serving, and often calories, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, and sugars as well. An excellent resource and shopping guide for anyone looking to lower their salt intake, the Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods can be easily slipped into any purse or pocket for use when dining out or shopping at the supermarket.

2.0 out of 5 stars EASY TO USE, BUT..., December 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is pretty simple to follow and fairly easy to use in general, but I have never heard of over 90% of the Brand Names for food items listed. I mean never. I do a ton of internet shopping and do my grocery shopping in multiple stores, and yet the vast majority of these "Name Brands" are totally foreign to me. Just for research, I tried looking for some of the brands on the internet, and couldn't find them. How is that going to help me shop for low-sodium foods in my local grocery stores? I don't feel I can use the Generic nutritional info, as there is really no way to know just how realistic those may be, as prepared food recipes can vary quite a bit from brand to brand and store to store.

I do find the listings for popular National chain restaurants and fast food places to be very informative, and have pretty much decided that I can never ever eat at any of those places ever ever again.

I guess I will just have to continue reading the nutritional labels of every single last grocery product I pick up in the supermarket, and resign to the fact that it's unhealthy to eat any entrée at any chain restaurant.
