An excellent resource and shopping guide,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods (Paperback)
Now in its 2003 edition, Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods by Bobbie Mostyn is a no-nonsense, but thoroughly "user friendly" informational pocketbook resource comprising more than 3,000 entries for generic and brand-name foods suited for low-salt diets. Each entry lists the estimated sodium content per serving, and often calories, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, and sugars as well. An excellent resource and shopping guide for anyone looking to lower their salt intake, the Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods can be easily slipped into any purse or pocket for use when dining out or shopping at the supermarket.

EASY TO USE, BUT...,

This book is pretty simple to follow and fairly easy to use in general, but I have never heard of over 90% of the Brand Names for food items listed. I mean never. I do a ton of internet shopping and do my grocery shopping in multiple stores, and yet the vast majority of these "Name Brands" are totally foreign to me. Just for research, I tried looking for some of the brands on the internet, and couldn't find them. How is that going to help me shop for low-sodium foods in my local grocery stores? I don't feel I can use the Generic nutritional info, as there is really no way to know just how realistic those may be, as prepared food recipes can vary quite a bit from brand to brand and store to store.I do find the listings for popular National chain restaurants and fast food places to be very informative, and have pretty much decided that I can never ever eat at any of those places ever ever again. I guess I will just have to continue reading the nutritional labels of every single last grocery product I pick up in the supermarket, and resign to the fact that it's unhealthy to eat any entrée at any chain restaurant.

With my diet being limited to 1500 mg of sodium each day, this book was a goldmine of information.

Bobbie did a great job of putting together this guide. I have been on a low sodium diet for several years. I became quite knowledgable on low sodium products, in fact I operate a website called eatlowsodium.com listing various low sodium foods (all under 200mg of sodium per serving). Bobbie's guide is one of the most comprehensive sources I have even seen. So I highly recommend it.

Great little book. Has a wealth of knowledge about sodium which I have to reduce in my diet. However it has a lot of Brand Names that are not available in Florida and not much information on the brands that are available here.

Should have paid more attention to this purchase. "Low Salt Favorites" by the same author is an excellent cookbook full of useful information about low-sodium diets. Covering sodium content in restaurant food is probably an impossible job unless you limit the scope to chain eateries. But that limit means it's of little use to me personally.

Mom loved this book!,

I bought this book for my mom who recently was put on a low salt diet due to going on warfen. She has found it to be very helpful in planning her meals and was able to use it also for helping plan meals for my father who is diabetic. She can find not only salt amounts, but also fat, sugar, and other information. She calls it her food Bible.
