“The third edition is an invaluable reference book for the novice perioperative nurse or surgical technologist. For someone studying for the CNOR, this is a tremendous resource book and study guide.”
-- The AORN Journal, December 2008

This pocket guide presents more than 500 surgical procedures! State-of-the-art revisions familiarize the reader with new standards of excellence for care of the surgical patient in the perioperative environment. For each procedure, you’ll find a definition • discussion • description of the surgery • preparation of the patient • skin preparation • draping technique • instrumentation • supplies • and special notes pertinent to that surgery.

Comprehensive patient care is addressed, including psychological care of the patient in surgery • safety measures for the patient and perioperative personnel • the written record of intra-, pre- and postoperative care • The Joint Commission’s Universal Protocol and AORN’s standards and recommended practices, (including correct site and laterality considerations).

Its in-depth coverage also encompasses charting as a legal document • patient teaching • detailed surgical patient positioning with drawings • anesthesia and anesthetic agents • laser application • robotics • endoscopy (including laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, thoracoscopic, and arthroscopic procedures) • microsurgery (including microendoscopy and microneuroendoscopy) • harmonic scalpel • argon beam coagulator • special considerations for the pediatric patient in surgery, (including anesthesia modifications and surgical procedures).

5.0 out of 5 stars I use this book everyday April 2, 2010
By Blondie
Having just graduated from school and entering the OR for the first time, I can attest that this is by far one of the best quick-reference texts I've owned yet! I use it every time I have questions on how a surgical procedure is carried out; it includes the surgical goal, equipment and instrumentation necessary, and special considerations for each and every kind of procedure in the book. This book is very useful also because it covers general and specialty surgeries. I highly recommend this for anyone entering the OR for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best gets even better! New 3rd Edition October 11, 2007
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Back in October 2007 I wrote: As a senior nursing student doing my practicum in the OR, this little book offers the best concise information on specific procedures. Great for preparing the night before or in 2 minutes before a procedure. We have a voluminous Medcom series available in our suite, but I haven't touched it since getting Goldman's gem. Our OR nurse educator has taken a look at my copy and is considering recommending it for her new hires. If your need is not immediate, be aware that a new edition will be out in December 2007.

January, 2008-Well the NEW EDITION is here and it's twice as many pages (1200), up-to-date (2007 vs. 1996), 100 new procedures and covers all the newest techniques and technology. As I now start my OR internship as a greduate nurse I look forward to using this new and even better edition of the best portable nursing reference for the OR! It's a bargain for the info it contains!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plastic Surgeon's review January 4, 2008
I find this "Pocket" guide to the O.R. very useful for both my operating room nurses and myself. It provides a convenient source for preparations so that the operating team can be more efficient and knowledgeable. The guide is valuable to any member of the operating team, especially with the diverse nature of surgery in the current times. Everyone associated with the Operating Room would find this book a useful addition to their armamentarium and I recommend it highly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Read the reviews...they're true. April 30, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was preparing to take the CNOR exam (after letting it lapse for 10+ years) and ordered this in conjunction with Alexander's. I did not find this book to be helpful in the least. Maybe for a TOTAL beginner OR nurse, this might be useful. Otherwise, I don't think so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought this when I became a circulating RN in training December 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was recommeded this book by a coworker when I was training to be a circulating RN. Good recommendation. It's pretty easy to carry around. It gives a basic overview of many of the procedures done in the OR, it includes info such as what the procedure is done for, steps of the procedure, and instrumentation used during the case, and other helpful info to give the truly novice circulating RN a background of what to expect during specific surgical case. It is easy to read and understand. I would recommend it as a useful resource for an RN just starting their training in the OR.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase December 16, 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is exactly what any ST needs to prepare for an unfamiliar surgery or simply to brush up your knowledge. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is the lack of pictures. But other than that, no complaints, and recommend it to anyone in an OR

This book offers precise informaiton on operating room procedure as well as technique variations and instrumentation. It also provides circulator information for the operating room and supplies needed. This is a very good book and I was not without it during my surgical technology rotation! It was highly recomended by other professionals as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference but certainly limited June 12, 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As the title implies, this is a "guide," so don't expect an exhaustive work on the operating room. In my opinion, a "drawback" of this book is that some of the information provided may not apply to or it may actually be completely different from what the nurse experiences in one hospital versus another. This can be frustrating for the nurse orientating to the operating room. The hospital or clinic where you work may do things somewhat differently, so don't get caught off guard and say, "Well, the book says we should do it this way!" I think the author does a good job providing basic information about the operating room, surgical procedures, setups, preps, supplies, etc., but there will certainly be variants depending on where you work. I think it's worth the investment, but don't get locked in to one text or think that this particular source is going to answer all of your questions or provide you with all of the information you need as a perioperative nurse. It's only a guide...have an open mind and be flexible. Most operating room orientations take at least one year, so expose yourself to various sources of learning.

It is not what I expected, but it is useful. Not what an experienced OR nurse really needs, but a good review.
