A very helpful guide at work,
By
This review is from: Pocket Guide to the Operating Room (Pocket Guide to Operating Room) (Paperback)
I have never written a review on a textbook. However, I borrowed this book from a co-worker numerous times and found it to be incredibly helpful. I am a Registered Nurse whom is in a training program in the Operating Room. This book gives me a basic understanding of the proceedure to be performed and much anticipatory guidance. When dealing with a trauma or emergency surgery, I don't have time to go to the psuedo-classroom to research the operation. This book fits right into my scrub's pocket. It is brief, concise and to the point. Sure Gray's Anatomy is the most detailed and reliable source for any nurse, but who has the time and patience when you are in a hurry? I not only reccomend this book for Nurses in training, but also to seasoned Nurses who may be thrown a curve ball in the middle of the night.

Wonderful Book!!!,
This review is from: Pocket Guide to the Operating Room (Pocket Guide to Operating Room) (Paperback)
This book is excellent for all the new surgical technologists and ST students out there! This book lays it down in simple, almost layman-like terms but is very thorough. Everythng you need to prepare for a case you have never done is in this book. I cannot say enough about how greatly helpful this book is! It has gotten me through alot of stressful situations! If you read this book the night before or right before a case the MD will think you are the greatest thing since sliced bread because it really tells you EVERYTHING you need to know! I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend buying this book. It makes your job SO much easier!!!

This book is wonderful! I have used it over and over again! I bring it home with me at night to review what my cases will be for the following day, and then, because the book is small enough I can take it along with me as a back-up! It gives sections on prepping as well as equipment needs, positioning, and what to expect during the surgery! It definitely is a "Must-Have" book for the OR nurse!

This book-which does need to be updated a bit- is absolutely ESSENTIAL!!!
A book such as this one can give you all your basics from draping questions right on through instrumentation & closing. It is a great reference when you are hit with a case you haven't done in a while or just need to review. You can't go wrong with it as a purchase.

Best gets even better! New 3rd Edition,
By
This review is from: Pocket Guide to the Operating Room (Pocket Guide to Operating Room) (Paperback)
Back in October 2007 I wrote: As a senior nursing student doing my practicum in the OR, this little book offers the best concise information on specific procedures. Great for preparing the night before or in 2 minutes before a procedure. We have a voluminous Medcom series available in our suite, but I haven't touched it since getting Goldman's gem. Our OR nurse educator has taken a look at my copy and is considering recommending it for her new hires. If your need is not immediate, be aware that a new edition will be out in December 2007.
January, 2008-Well the NEW EDITION is here and it's twice as many pages (1200), up-to-date (2007 vs. 1996), 100 new procedures and covers all the newest techniques and technology. As I now start my OR internship as a greduate nurse I look forward to using this new and even better edition of the best portable nursing reference for the OR! It's a bargain for the info it contains!

This book is perfect for the scrub who wants to take every case but doesn't have the experience or just needs a brush-up. Even my instructors (both first-assists) recommended this book as a must-have.

New OR nurse,

This review is from: Pocket Guide to the Operating Room (Pocket Guide to Operating Room) (Paperback)
I started a new job as a nurse in the OR during the winter of 2007. After an uneven and very stressful orientation, I ordered this book looking for information to explain the many questions that seem to pop up daily. The OR is a very fast-moving and there is pressure on everyone to stay on schedule, which leads to a poor learning environment. I think that this book is helpful, but I would have rated it higher, or felt better about purchasing it, had it not cost $35.00. It is a bit simplistic, even for someone like me who has only worked in the OR for less than a year. Had I spent, perhaps, $10.00-$15.00, I would feel that it was a good value, because there are parts of the book that have given me new insight into a certain procedures. This book is more of a technical book, and I was looking for something with more of a medical-surgical approach. I would prefer a book that would help a new OR nurse understand better, specifically, how each different surgical procedure should proceed, in theory, and what common problems are, and what nursing interventions to use. I think this book contains some great information, but it is more of a "summary" in a technical way. Again, a great guide to have had it been much cheaper, but not worth $35.00, in my opinion.

This is a very compact guide packed with detail but has no photos or illustrations. The print is a small font they used in an effort to squeeze in as much info as possible. It is useful for surgical techs 7 operating room personnel as far as putting together surgical instrument trays/packs.
