Book Description

Concise, problem-oriented and accessibly designed, the Pocket Handbook focuses throughout on the essentials of medicine and surgery of the dog and cat. The book’s aim is to help start the process of case management and resolution. There are tips and hints on interpretation of physical signs, diagnostic tests and management of common presenting conditions. Algorithms used to assist decision-making are a major feature of the book. They are used extensively in part 2 ‘Clinical presentations’ and in Part 5 ‘Critical care’. Commonly used drugs, their dose rates and precautions are presented in tabular form. Colour diagrams and photos illustrate key points.

The Pocket Handbook is an indispensable rapid reference guide and revision aid for veterinary students, recently-qualified practitioners and those returning to small animal practice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

…having used this book during my small animal medicine rotation, I shall find a way of making room for it [in my pocket]...a fantastic quick guide for those critical moments...teaches you to think, rather than giving you lists of differentials...jam-packed with lots of useful factual information – reference parameters, therapeutic protocols and diagnostic tests...a great starting point for viva revision...For new graduates and experienced clinicians alike, it offers a simple, readable reference guide to help you think through cases using a logical problem-solving framework...novel in it’s approach...I for one will be keeping it close at hand throughout my final year of vet school
—Myfanwy Hill, Veterinary Record, September 2012

...useful decision trees...the author's choice of information is useful...a nice little handbook for medicine...provide[s] a discussion point for graduates and their mentors and coaches in practice...
—Dr. Paul R Manning, Veterinary Practice, October 2012

This is the book vet students wished they had on clinical rotations when they realise they have missed a key piece of information and need to locate it quickly.
Australian Veterinary Journal, Volume 91, No 7, July 2013

From the Back Cover

Praise for this book:

[This book] provides an excellent framework to help [readers] think about cases...it is novel in its approach, and I will be keeping it close at hand throughout my final year of vet school.-- Myfanwy Hill, Veterinary Record, September, 2012

This is a nice, handy pocket-sized book that could be carried around in a jacket pocket by the student, newish graduate or perhaps a more experienced vet with responsibilities for coaching young graduates...There are some useful decision trees in the field of medicine including the common systems of the body and symptomologies encountered in first opinion practice. -- Dr. Paul R. Manning, Veterinary Practice, October, 2012

3.0 out of 5 stars Good. Just not what I was looking for. June 6, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Good diagnosis flow diagrams but not quite what I was expecting. I wanted something that had a little more info on the diseases/DDx. Otherwise not bad.
