5.0 out of 5 stars Pocket guide does not fit in most pockets., April 3, 2000
This review is from: Pocket Idiot's Guide To Car Repair (Paperback)
Don't expect to buy "The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Carrepair" and straighten that frame or rebuild that rear-axle. The"Pocket Guide" is more of a general maintenance and light repair guide written for the the mechanically uninclined.

If your an experienced mechanic or know the Snap-On catalogue like the back of your hand than this book may be a bit slow for you. If you've never taken a tire off a car or don't know what makes an engine run, than this is your book.

The guide is a fast and easy read that explains the various workings of a car, more in the hopes of finding a honest mechanic than putting the local Jiffy-Lube out of business. It covers the basics of almost every car from the authors big 50's raod beast to his new Japanese econo-box. It explains the bigger issues of car owning and maintenance (How to change a tire, what turns gasoline into exhaust ect.) That every car owner should know, but didnt learn from dad.

This book wont get you into General Motors as the new engineer, wont teach you how to cross the county with a bottle of WD-40 and a roll of Duct tape. But it WILL teach you about how your car works and what to do when it goes wrong (Something terribly needed in these bad-driver filled days).

As the author suggests, Buy a copy, keep it in your car, and toss it at the driver of the broken-down car in the express lane during your next traffic jam. END
