Book Description

In this second book of the critically acclaimed series, James takes the reader to a deeper level of mindfulness, sharing gems of wisdom in his succinct, eloquent trademark manner.

James begins by addressing why mindfulness practice is essential in cultivating mental stability in daily life. He then quite brilliantly writes through the human condition, explaining how the complexity of mind causes us to encounter such difficulty in finding true happiness.

James contextually weaves his way to higher-level teachings, leaving no stone unturned as he delivers wonderful explanations on how mindfulness teaches us the purpose of life, how to love selflessly and how to make peace with the inevitable fate of death.

This second book stands alone as a must read for all those with an interest in living mindfully, but also as an excellent follow up to the first compelling instalment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read November 23, 2012

I read the first part in the Pocket Mindfulness series and it really provoked my interest, and since I have been reading a lot more on the subject. I really like the way the author breaks down difficult concepts, and I probably learned more about myself reading this than any other book to date. If you're interested in how to live a happier existence this is a must read.

As a psychologist interested in how mindfulness practice can benefit both my work and the lives of my patients, I found this book incredibly intriguing. This will definitely be staying on my Kindle for the long term. Some serious food for thought here.

More About the Author

Alfred James was born in London in 1978. A mindfulness teacher and author, he is the founder of Pocketmindfulness.com and writer of the book series of the same name.

James has been featured in a number of notable publications, including Mindful Magazine, The Evening Standard, Huffington Post, and Lifehacker.com.

James teaches mindfulness as a pathway to helping people cope with stress and anxiety, and as a way of attaining acceptance of self and others. A qualified Life Coach and student of Eastern philosophy, James has travelled extensively in South East Asia, learning mindfulness meditation from a number of notable teachers, including Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) and Tibetan Dzogchen lama, Sogyal Rinpoche.

On life, James says:

"If for a moment we allow ourselves to stop over-analysing the past and trying to predict the future, to stop judging and perceiving, to stop grasping at material things and empty goals, we naturally begin to cultivate a purer awareness of life, which in turn opens up a pathway capable of leading us to inner peace and subsequent true contentment.

Within this realisation, we begin to understand life for what it really is - a series of beautifully sequenced moments in a wonderfully interdependent world".

James' first short book, Pocket Mindfulness, was well-received by mindfulness thought leaders for its modern and somewhat poetic approach to defining mindfulness practice. The pocket-sized guide has fast become a notable source of quotation for many teachers and mindfulness practitioners, and reached the top of the Amazon Kindle spirituality category.

Due to its popularity, James expanded the concept into a short series, with the second volume elaborating on matters of 'self', ego, love, life and death, and the third covering the manifestation of mindfulness through meditation.

James has recently released his second book, Mindfulness Exercises; a guide to cultivating mindfulness using a variety of practical meditation exercises.
