5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!, January 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pocket Monster Sound Anime Collection (Audio CD)
At first, I wasn't sure what this CD was like, but when I got it, I was very surprised! This CD has all the background music from the Japanese TV show, as well as the two TV-sized vocals for the ending theme and opening one. The CD comes in a box, with stickers and a colour hardcover book. The BGM on the CD is excellent to say the least and alot of it used in the dub, so if you like the BGM in the dub, you'll love this CD! It's highly recomended.

This is one of those hidden gems of the Pokemon universe. I've been a fan of the dubbed anime ever since it started, and I was surprised that they never released a "score" soundtrack with the background music. Eventually, I noticed this Japanese CD, bought it immediately, and I couldn't be more happy with it! The first track is the Japanese anime opening song, which is actually pretty good, and the rest of the tracks are the background music from the anime just as they were used.

Having said that, I do have some thoughts... As great as this CD is, I feel it is my duty to everyone out there to point out a few little flaws that don't really affect my enjoyment, but may affect other people. After each track is a mildly annoying interjection by the Japanese Pokedex that goes on for a good 30 seconds (depending on the track), but it's simple enough to push the "next track" button (provided you're not driving; you'll end up doing it about every three minutes) or to burn an "edited" copy with all of that cut. Plus, in the ether between tracks 1 & 2 is an extremely annoying exchange between the Japanese Ash & Pikachu. Again, simple to remedy but annoying nonetheless. For me, the biggest problem with this CD is that there is a very small handful of songs that didn't make it onto this disc. Remember that music that was used inside the gyms in the GB game as well as the anime? It's gone. The dramatic music in the first episode as Ash & Pikachu are biking away from the Spearow? Gone. Again, not a crucial factor, but if you just so happen to really like those songs, it kind of [is bad] that they weren't included.

Well, those are the ups-and-downs of this CD in my view. I tried to be very thorough so anyone reading this can make their own judgment. Personally, I would advise people who like the background music in the anime to go ahead and buy this disc despite the flaws. If you like the music, you should be able to tolerate the aforementioned quirks with relative ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love the Pokemon TV BGM, the buy this NOW!, November 30, 2000

This is a great import CD which include the opening and ending themes, as well as most of the season one background music of Pokemon (US and Japan). Most of the tracks end with a short commentary by, I'm assuming, the Japanese PokeDex. If the PokeDex gets too annoying, he can always be edited out if you have the ways and means (i.e. sound editing software).

The CD also comes with a small hardcover book about who-knows-what with pictures and what-nots, but it's a nice thing to have nonetheless.

I bought this CD for only one track, the Team Rocket theme but I was extremely pleased with the rest of the music. It's real music orchestrated with real instruments (most of the time) unlike the music used in some American toons. The CD costs in the neighborhood of around $40 but hey, it's an import and imports don't come cheap. But trust me, it will be money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Pokemon CD!, October 5, 2000

This review is from: Pocket Monster Sound Anime Collection (Audio CD)
This great CD has lots of background music from the Japanese series of Pokemon, as well as the opening theme music. Even if you can`t understand the strange inserts between each snippet, you will be able to recognise a lot because some BGM is also used in the US version of the cartoon, like the Team Rocket theme and Pokemon Battle music. This CD also comes with some stickers and a storybook (all in Japanese, but presented really well). These nice extras add up to what is a great little package! Even if you can`t speak Japanese, if you like Pokemon music you must buy this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget it's Pokémon, the music deserves a standing ovation!, May 5, 2010
This review is from: Pocket Monster Sound Anime Collection (Audio CD)
Okay, let's explain. It all started in 1996 when Satoshi Tajiri with his friend and a small studio created a game called Pocket Monsters for the Gameboy. As it always goes, a soundtrack was created by Junichi Masuda. While the portable console's speakers couldn't produce very realistic sounds, the music itself was actually quite good.

In 1998, a rather good anime based in the game was made in Japan. The soundtrack from the games + some original material was arranged for an orchestra by Shinji Miyazaki. The result is awesome. What once was a nice sounding bunch of beeps, became something much more.

This album has two songs, but you will probably (most likely) ignore them. The rest is a musical variety show. Since music was made FOR a show, there are tracks for every situation. Happy, sad, romantic, frantic, silly, meditative,... it has it all, and then some!

After each track there's a few seconds of japanese dialogue, explaining what each is and where in the anime did they put it. If you like, with Audacity you can cut those parts out, for ultimate listening experience.

If you want a sample, search for "pokemon sound anime collection legend" on youtube. THe track "Legend" is particularly good. If no one deleted it, you should listen. That alone will probable make you want to buy this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good-- wish there were more like this, November 26, 2003

I've proudly owned this cd for over a year, yet still I listen to it as if I'd just received it. I wish subsequent Pokemon BGM cd's were released for later seasons. As far as the music in the Spero scene not being included, it is, technically. Remember this is a Japanese Import soundtrack. It does not contain the American BGM that is inserted into the show at times. Having imported episode 1 from Japan, I've learned the music THEY use for that scene is Track 22-- the Main Battle Theme. Hope this helps.
