I wish I had read these three previous reviews prior to spending the money on this. Unfortunately, I found this dictionary through the store on the Kindle and I thought it would help me when reading my German maerchen. Especially after reading the following description:

It is also indispensable for business users, whether as a travel or desk dictionary. All the new German spellings have been incorporated into the text.

...first years of studying German... What?!?! Sadly, as the other reviewers explain, this book is for German-speakers who are reading English books! The only German words this default dictionary will translate for you are the ones that are spelled exactly the same as English words!

So...the one star is for the MISLEADING description on the Kindle Store.

I wanted to buy a german to english dictionary so I downloaded a sample of this book to my kindle. I got the g letter in german so it was OK. So I thought to buy the dictionary. But the dictionary I bought was only english to german whereas my sample was german to english. The dictionary I bought is useless to me and I feel that I have been mislead from the sample. Those of you who want a german to english dictionary, BEWARE

Reading english books and newspapers are much easier for germans with the Pocket Oxford-Duden English German Dictionary now. You can change your dictionary choice in the Kindle after purchasing this book, so that you can look up the german translation for words while reading. Thanks to the clipping function it is even possible to save the words and translations to the file clippings.txt - great way to build you own vocabulary list. To change the default dictionary:

- Press the Home button.
- Press the Menu button.
- Move the joystick to "Settings" and select.
- Press the Menu button.
- Move the joystick to "Change Primary Dictionary" and select.
- Move the joystick to the Pocket Oxford-Duden English German Dictionary and press to select.

I've studied many languages, with German being my first. I have German-English, French-English, Russian-English and other dictionaries. In over forty years of studying foreign languages, I've never made the mistake of buying a one-way dictionary - until now.
As other reviewers have pointed out, if I want to read the Frankfurter Allgemeine and need to look up a German word, this dictionary is useless. I wish I had read past the first review. I never would have bought this book.

I wanted to be able to look up translations for german words.. and it didnt pick any of the simple words up.. the first paragraph had anfangen in it.. and it didnt get it.. it did tell me all of the english words tranlations into german but when i would go and highlight the same word it called out.. it would not give me the english version.

I have a Duden dictionary - German/German - in hardcopy, and was hoping to get the same for my Kindle. No soap. Hope you're listening, Amazon. Need a major dictionary or two to go with the German-language offerings for Kindle: one for English-language natives who are fairly advanced in their German, and one German-to-German so we can understand the nuances, instead of taking someone else's word for a translation/interpretation (isn't that the point of reading something in the original language?)

I just bought this because the description said that it could be used as a default dictionary with the kindle and recommended for English speakers studying German. I bought a German newspaper and wanted to use this dictionary to help me with words that I don't know but it cannot be used that way. It is English to German only! I just wasted my money! Any one know if there is another dictionary out there that is German to English for the kindle?

This dictionary is quite useful for a German user and the price is ok. But the entries in it are rather short, often just a one or two lines. Also, it is just a dictionary from English to German, the direction German to English is not included. So if you expect a dictionary of the same size as "The new Oxford American Dictionary" then you will be disappointed.

I downloaded this to be able to translate words to English when reading German text. Translation works only for English words into German. That needs to be made more clear in the product description. It is worthless to me.

Do not buy this if you want a german-english dictionary, it doesn't work that way
Someone could recommend me another dictionary german-english for the Kindle?
