5.0 out of 5 stars Bates Pocket guide to physical exams and history taking
This is a very informative reference. I am a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy and I see a wide variety of patients on a daily basis. This guide helps me out in performing the correct exams or tests. It also helps the doctor out when he reads my write up. This allows less time for the patient in medical, less time for the doctor, so he doesn't have to see the patient...

1.0 out of 5 stars Binding CIA horrible on this book
I have had this book for a month or two and the binding on it is coming apart. I know the cover was damaged, but I didn't thin the entire cover was gone. The pages are falling out of the book.

It also helps me out when a patient is presented to medical with a complaint that I have not heard of or seen yet. I have learned so much more with this book. Thank You and if you are in the medical field and see patients like I do, I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars EASY-TO-COMPREHEND POCKET GUIDE, March 30, 2003
By
reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This "Bates' Pocket Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking" is an easy-to-comprehend manual which was structured in a way that should meet the needs of both doctors and nurses. The information contained in this book are simple and straightforward; and just like the complete edition, they included paediatric coverage. The chapters of this book examined both morphological and physiological abnormalities and/or irregularities. They included several illustrative charts and tables, which facilitate comparative analyses of clinical data.
If appropriately adhered to, the supervisory procedures outlined in this book would assist medics in making correct evaluation of each case they encounter. Also worth pointing out, is the way the book paid attention to drug administration.
In all, this is a good medical adviser, which inexperienced medics should have in their lab-coat pockets.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a find!, July 29, 2000
This book is a very thorough review of the physical diagnostic exam. It provides a thorough review of systems that is brief and to the point. While not a substitute for the text, it is quick and easy to use. To top it all off, it REALLY is a perfect sized book for the pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars bates pocket guide to physical examination, February 22, 2009
By
I have used this book in my clinical setting and it is chock full of information and it is well written. It even has guidelines how to write up a clinical note with using the correct medical terms. I would suggest this book for anyone in the medical/nursing field who works with and assesses patients. A great pocket book

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good for the pictures..., December 10, 2007
By
Since a few of the other reviews are too over-the-top to take seriously, I thought I would add my comments: It's nice 'cause it fits in your pocket, & it's nice cause it has lots of the Bates pictures in it. Unfortunately, it includes a lot of basic text at the expense of the more uncommon presentations and PE tests. I'm in the middle of my PA rotation year and I already ignore this book most of the time for that reason. If you have already memorized the more basic aspects of the larger Bates text, don't expect to reference this often. I'll repeat though - it IS nice to have the pictures...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide, February 22, 2011

I find the pocket book useful as a reference guide. If you want in depth explanations, get the full version of Bates but this one is excellent if you are on the wards or in a preceptor's office.

Perfect size to fit in your pocket. Much needed resource as you just can't remember everything off the top of your head. Covers the entire body and systems. A quick reference when needed and examples for history taking. Extremely valuable. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good as quick reference with adequate level of detail, September 30, 2009
My medical school clinical course wanted us to get the full version of Bates but I've found that this is more than sufficient for the course and it will be particularly handy when I start rotations next year.
