4.0 out of 5 stars dEUS...America needs you!
Having been an avid dEUS fan since seeing them on tour with Blur in 1997 (their last US tour), I wait with bated breath for every new album (unfortunately, that means every 4 years or so). I'm writing this review after only 2 listens of "pocket revolution". Overall, it's dEUS, so you know it's gonna be good...as good as "Ideal Crash"? Not quite...so pick that one up...

not as eclectic and adventurous as their previous works, sounds like a conscious attempt at reaching a wider audience with a more conventional pop-rock oriented product. The songwriting is good.

Overall an above-average CD (for the market, not for the band) that's certainly worth listening to and possibly buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars dEUS...America needs you!, November 2, 2005

Having been an avid dEUS fan since seeing them on tour with Blur in 1997 (their last US tour), I wait with bated breath for every new album (unfortunately, that means every 4 years or so). I'm writing this review after only 2 listens of "pocket revolution". Overall, it's dEUS, so you know it's gonna be good...as good as "Ideal Crash"? Not quite...so pick that one up first if you want to get into the more accessible dEUS. But "Pocket" is a damn fine album...let's face it, the guys are getting older...the songs reflect. No straight rockers "ala Suds n Soda" here, but the old dEUS shines through to these new tracks nonetheless. Some of the highlights....

Bad Timing: great building crescendo piece.

7 days,7 weeks: just plain beautiful all around.

If you don't get what you want: this is textbook dEUS..listen to that amazingly quirky guitar riff..how can anyone not love this?

Cold Sun of Circumstance: another dEUS classic in the making.

Sun-Ra: more like HOO-RAH!

This album is not perfect (4 stars), there are one or two tracks that don't bowl me over, but I can say that about any dEUS album...the other good thing is that dEUS albums tend to grow on you the more you listen..lots of things to pick out, lots of layers, great replay value! BUY THIS ALBUM! Buy ALL dEUS ALBUMS (except my sister=my clock ep...a low mark in the dEUS timeline)...I love these guys...Belgium's best need to tour the states once again! PLEASE!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars dEUS are back, March 30, 2006
By
This review is from: Pocket Revolution (Audio CD)
"dEUS are back.

As the last millennium flickered to a close and fresh from releasing the sublime third album Ideal Crash and the Europe-wide sell out extravaganza of the accompanying tour, new vistas began to beckon and a trail of personal solo musical projects and, in lead singer Tom Barman's case, the small matter of writing and directing his debut movie, 'Any Way The Wind Blows', led the band in a myriad of different directions. So diversely busy has the band been that it is a wonder that they actually made it back so quickly.

The page turns and now dEUS are back. New album, new line up, new passion. Drummer Stéphane Misseghers (ex Soulwax) joined dEUS as they began work on the new album. The line up was finally crystallized in the Autumn of 2004 when Alan Gevaert (ex Chris Withley & Arno) joined on bass and, Craig Ward, having moved on to pastures new, was replaced in dEUS by friend and musical cohort, the legendarily and effortlessly cool Mr Mauro Pawlowski (formerly the lead singer with the much missed Evil Superstars and also Mitsoobishi Jacson amongst many other fine incarnations).

Pre-Christmas gigs sold out in an instant, and rave reviews suggested a prodigal return. The promise of a fourth studio album of new material, whet the appetite of all who were familiar with the musical landscape that dEUS had thus far created and new audiences will surely beckon. dEUS may have been a little tardy of late, but no one can doubt that this fourth album will further the musical canon of a band in perpetual motion - in measure enchanting, confounding, heartbreaking and dazzling, but never ever disappointing.

The stage is set and dEUS are now on tour promoting their new album "Pocket Revolution"."

Less experimental, more guitars and the most beautiful dEUS song: "Nothing really ends" (previously released on their singles collection). As usual, you have to listen to it a couple of times before you judge it. Buy it and listen to it at least 10 times in a row... You'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pontiac picks another winner., February 5, 2007
This review is from: Pocket Revolution (Audio CD)
I've come to find that Pontiac never goes wrong with any of the background music for their car commercials, and they definitely didn't go wrong by using dEUS's "If you don't Get What You Want". In fact I liked the song so much i went and got the album. I think i found one of my new favorite groups in the process they're a nice blend of chill and kind of that early 90's alternative. if you're a fan of this album i definitely suggest checking out WCS, it's a little weirder, but still really cool.

Also if you like this band, i suggest checking out M83, kind of electronic technoish with some cool riffs thrown in every now and then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Barman has done it again, December 8, 2006
This review is from: Pocket Revolution (Audio CD)
Belgium's dEUS have been releasing some of the most original music around for the last decade or so . It's true that commercially speaking, their career never really did take off . Still their latest release , Pocket Revolution contains more ideas than the last twenty cds you bought add up together . From the well-written rock of "Bad Timing" , "Seven Days , Seven Weeks" and "What We Talked About" to the warmth of "The Real Sugar" and "Include Me Out " the band displays freshness and sheer talent . Their comeback is much more than just welcome .

3.0 out of 5 stars More expectation, but glad they're back, September 23, 2005
This review is from: Pocket Revolution (Audio CD)
A decade ago gave me one of the most amazing and mind opening experiences of my musical life, with the release of Worst Case scenario. In a Bar Under the Sea annoyed me at first, as it wasn't a replica of WCS, then I got over myself and let myself go on another amazing experience. The movement of the Deus express was shedding band members quicker than Queen on a mercury-less super annuation tour, and things were going off. (also still can't get over the attractively repellent My sister is my clock). The Ideal Crash wowed me straight away, but perhaps overlistening, and their fear of pushing their boundaries out again, meant alot of fading over time, with a few stand out forever tracks, then nothing... Got that same freaky feeling with the impending release of Pocket Revolution, but kept it in check. Will stop rambling, it's great they're back, but not a great album, certainly good, 'what you talk about (when you talk about love)', is there, but it has some very suprisingly cheesy riffs, and his haunting lyrics of before, seem a tad more forced, saying words for effect rather than meaning. Bottom line is, I don't care too much, as they tour now, and I can see them. I'd recommend the album, a bit more mainstream, but a wee bit mature, (I lament one guitar riff, that sounds Chicago-esque, tinny and 80's!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars DEUS VOICE, February 11, 2006
This review is from: Pocket Revolution (Audio CD)
And suddenly the room was filled with the very warm and known sound of Deus.

We did wait for this album long time now all of us who believed in the group and we can say it was more than worthy. Bad Timing opens this latest work and proves in seconds that it does not come in bad timing at all to be followed of 7 Days, 7 Weeks which sounds like a inspired pop hymn with simple forms.

The guitars keep on playing an important role giving you the impression that they are in a non stop dialogue between them.

You will feel it when you hear the Cold Sun of Circumstance but in Night shopping the rock air the song brings is going to remind you where you come from.

Listen to this great cd I believe it is worthy.
