5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Pocket NIV
I have found that this is the best pocket bible. Use where you need a complete bible in a pocket size, such as for devotional reading and evangelism. It's size makes it excellent for travel because it fits easily into your travel gear (suit pocket, attache case, handbag, etc.) I use it every day during my commute to work. 2.0 out of 5 stars Serious problems with the NIV translation
The NIV utilizes a thought for thought translation principle rather than the more literal word-for-word principle of versions like the NASB or KJV.

If you compare the NIV to these versions or to the word-for-word translation in an interlinear, you will notice it often differs significantly. And when does, it will either be because the NIV is not translating words found...

I have recommended and bought this bible for friends and acquaintances, and everyone admires it. The snap tab protects the long-edge gold leafs. People are surprised that it contains both the Old and New Testaments. It does not include extensive study aids -- that would only add to its bulk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly handy Bible!, January 2, 2002

The Thinline Pocket-size NIV Bible is the best Bible I've ever had. I am a minister to children and youth, and it comes in handy during my teaching times. It's easy to read, and best of all, it's not bulky or hard to carry. The thinline Bible is the perfect gift for someone on the go. I'm purchasing one for a former youth group member who is in need of new Bible. I am excited to hear how she likes this new Thinline Pocket Bible. I hardly ever use my NIV Study Bible anymore...mainly because of the convenience of the Pocket-sized NIV. It's light-weight and fun to use. In my opinion, this is a must have. When my current Pocket-sized NIV deteriorates, I will purchase another one just like it...it's been very helpful to me in my ministry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Portable and great!, June 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Pocket-Size Bible (International Version) (Paperback)
First of all, it's small! It's very convenient to carry around, especially when you don't want to carry around big Bible. And yet it contains not only the Bible itself but some more references like specific verses for each parable. Since this book is really small, the letters are also small, so it may be hard for some people to read the words, but if you have normal eye sight, you don't need to worry about it. This company also publish the same one with button-snap, so if you prefer that version, it is also avairable. If you want a small Bible with some references, this is it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Serious problems with the NIV translation, March 16, 2002
This review is from: Pocket-Size Bible (Leather Bound)
The NIV utilizes a thought for thought translation principle rather than the more literal word-for-word principle of versions like the NASB or KJV.

If you compare the NIV to these versions or to the word-for-word translation in an interlinear, you will notice it often differs significantly. And when does, it will either be because the NIV is not translating words found in the Hebrew and Greek texts, or the NIV is adding words not found in the original texts. And even worse, these added words are not offset from the original God-inspired words by being placed in italics like the NASB and KJV do.

A simple example of the former can be seen in Joshua 1:8. In this verse, the NASB has 50 words while the KJV has 48 words, but the NIV only has 30 words. You don't need to be a Hebrew scholar to figure out that the NIV has left out quite a bit here! And a simple example of added words not being indicated can be seen in 1Cor 7:9. The NIV adds the words "with passion" at the end of this verse without any indication it has done so. Altogether, there are probably thousand of added and omitted words in the NIV. To me, this indicates serious problems with the NIV.

I discuss in further detail the problems with the NIV and similar versions in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.
