Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Loading their blankets with dreams and their pillows with wishes landed Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer a couple of Grammy nods, and sprinkling the stardust that's lining their pockets on this last installment of the trilogy should short-list them for a third. A parcel of lullabies this crafty and playful pops up so infrequently it practically commands us to take a stiff broom to our own sleepiness and listen along, wide-eyed. The pair's vocal caresses and wound-down instrumentation aside, kids aren't apt to conk out right away either. But that's by design. Fink and Marxer promote here what hero Pete Seeger called "nighttime propaganda"--they sneak up on the sandman, ambushing him with a track-by-track tempo tone-down. Opener "Rhythm of the World" is downright upbeat with its steel drums, congas, and "Ching-a-ling-a-ling, hear the bells ring/ Ching-a-ling-a-lum, hands on a drum" verse, but by the time we reach "I Got Pajamas" in mid-CD, the mood is decidedly mellower (never mind the safari, spaceships, and bed full of llamas). "Whispers" and "Wish for Tomorrow" preside over the final descent into dreamland, with flowers whispering to the grass, grass whispering to the dew, and the moon rising high in the blue. Stylish but not oversimplified lyrics, the occasional sweet strains of a children's ensemble, and well-played bites of cittern, viola, fiddle, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, oboe, and rain stick scatter a mellow blend of stardust that'll see kids ages 1 to 8 taking off their nightcaps yet again to the reigning queens of PJ propaganda. --Tammy La Gorce

Product Description

Pocket Full of Stardust is a collection of new songs that combine playful and artful music with themes that surround bedtime and rest time. It completes a trilogy that includes two GRAMMY nominated recordings, Blanket Full of Dreams and Pillow Full of Wishes. Pete Seeger said his children called lullabies "night time propaganda" songs. On Pocket Full of Stardust, Cathy & Marcy play a bit, laugh a bit and eventually sneak into a mood for snuggling, stories, wishes and dreams. Sixteen original songs in wide variety of musical styles and a wonderful children's ensemble will help you sprinkle your "Pocket Full of Stardust" anytime, anywhere. Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer are multi-GRAMMY finalists with awards for their children's and family music from The Parents' Choice Foundation, The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, American Library Association, Early Childhood News and the Washington Area Music Association. Their live performances have set the standard for family participation and fun, and their recordings have inspired kids, parents, grandparents, teachers and friends to sing together and enjoy the magic of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT! Not your typical lullabies - better! March 4, 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
My 5 year old always has trouble getting to sleep - we always put on music to help settle him down & also to drown out other noises - when this arrived last night we popped it in - it is not your typical lullabies, but he really enjoyed just laying down and listening to the music. He settled down faster & slept better. Lyrics were great!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Pleasant Surprise! This is a Really Good CD January 18, 2004
Format:Audio CD
The best children's music are the best CDs by Raffi, but this one is good too.

My family and I checked out this CD from our local library, and this is one of the better children's/family CD's we have heard. This music is really interesting and talented, with several excellent songs. Your children will like this, and so will you.

There's are songs with just a touch of folk, jazz, and celtic. Some are very singable, and there are a few songs that are especially excellent. This is good music. The CD starts a little on the playful side and then sort of winds down, supposedly to help children get ready for bed. Whatever the goal, it's good music.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely--For both kids and adults October 8, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Another great CD from Cathy & Marcy. A lovely mix of accoustic tunes. The sophisticated arrangements means that adults can enjoy the CD as much as kids. Good choice of material--humorous to gentle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids, just as great for adults! May 20, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Pocket Full of Stardust is a surprise in so many ways. Musically, it is interesting and thoughtful.

My 3 year old cousin came to town this weekend and the moment I introduced her to the music of Cathy & Marcy, she was as happy as can be. She was dancing around the living room and was very entertained.

I recommend Cathy & Marcy's music to those who are tired of the same, boring children's music!

They offer a completely new take on educating and entertaining your young ones.
