I am in the habit of giving Bibles away - my wife reminds me of the sum of money I have given away in these books. This NT will NOT be given away. It has quickly become my favorite Bible ever. The size is perfect. It feels and looks very cool and classy. I know we "spiritual" folks are never to admit we are respecters of aesthetics - but I have to confess -- It is cool!

The ESV translation has replaced the NASB as my favorite - very slowly. It is accurate and modern at the same time - W. Tyndale would approve. I strayed from my beloved NASB because of the astounding deals Crossway publishers offers on their Bibles. I was blown away by the quality. Like my other Crossway ESV Bible, the binding in this NT is perfect. I have been very disappointed with every other Bible in my library, in regards to how quickly they crack in the binding - even my very expensive leather Bibles.

The type is perfect - thanks to a new font that keeps your eyes focused on the words as you read the one column print. It is really a pleasure to read. The value is unbelievable. I pre-ordered this four months before it was available and was very happy when it arrived. You will be too.

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Psalm 119:89 ESV

This is an excellent New Testament. More and more people are opting for their phone as their pocket Bible, but there is just something about having a Bible on the printed page, for me at least. It just seems more relaxing to read. The leather on this one is very nice and the size if perfect for a back pocket for a man, or a purse for a lady. The print is easy to read (I'm 59 and farsighted). I love having the Psalms included. The ESV is a good translation. I recommend this little New Testament.

I am impressed with this leather-bound ESV Pocket New Testament with Psalms & Proverbs.
It is well-constructed, and the print is of high quality.

The Words of Christ appear in a dark red, and the text of the scripture is typeset in a
single-column format, rather than the double-column format seen in nearly all Bibles.

There is a generous use of spacing between sections of print, which makes it easier to
keep your place when reading the small type.

Given the inherent physical imitations of any "pocket-sized" NT, I would say that
Crossway has done as good a job as one could realistically expect with this printing.

My company, The Bible Museum ( GREATSITE.COM ), deals in rare & antique Bibles
and we also publish affordable facsimile reproductions of ancient Bibles... but we only
deal in ancient English translations, such as the King James Version, and the several
English translations that are OLDER than the King James Version.

When people call me and ask me to recommend a good modern English translation
(which we do not sell), I always refer them to the English Standard Version (E.S.V.),
as it is widely regarded as the most accurate modern English translation, while still
maintaining a smooth "readability" of the scriptural text.

If they are looking for a complete Bible in modern English, I recommend the
"Reformation Study Bible - E.S.V." as published by Ligonier Ministries.

If they are looking for just a pocket-sized New Testament, I would recommend
this lovely ESV Pocket NT with Psalms & Proverbs. It is the best example of
such a printing that I have ever seen.

While I prefer bigger font for longer periods of reading, this is a great single column New Testament for purse, pocket, glove box, etc. Depending on your quality of eyesight, you may not have much difficulty reading its 7 pt. font. A bright reading light helps. Great binding and the cover is so much like leather.

This bible, small although not pocket sized, (measures 4"x5 1/2"x 3/4"), is well made, and well packaged (if you were looking to give it as a gift, it comes in a very nice box). The binding looks like real leather, it can't be at this price, but it's the best fake I've ever seen. Pages are Grandma's bible tissue thin, but sturdy, and the edges are gilt which is lovely. Just the gospels, with Jesus' words printed in red, Psalms and Proverbs, just exactly what I was looking for for a young friend who is seeking, and looking to know JC a little better. Dark brown ribbon page marker. Blank pages in front and a page printed with "Presented to... by... on... , again perfect for a gift. It looks just slightly male in it's compact dark brown leather cover. Very pleased with this purchase.

This review is NOT about the ESV as a translation vs. other translations, it's about this specific bible edition.

PROS:
-Very readable because:
....single column, paragraph format
....relatively minimal distraction from the text
....readable font
-Sewn binding and overall good quality
-Small size
-Crossway lifetime guarantee

CONS
-Some readability distractions:
....footnotes; I wish they were removed, but it's hard to find editions without footnotes
....Red letter - i'm not a fan of Jesus' words in red (one of the less useful modern inventions)
-Not as nice as the previous pocket edition reviewed here...

After buying this bible, I found Crossway's previous pocket NT edition at a local christian bookstore, which is reviewed here:[google "foolish galatian esv pocket new testament"]
I really like Crossway's older edition:
-It's smaller - at least in length and height, which makes it feel much more portable. The newer edition is smaller but doesn't quite feel small enough to fit in your pocket. The actual differences in dimension is probably not huge, but enough to make a noticeable different
-Better quality - supposedly they both use Tru-Tone, but the older edition feels much much better - the material is more supple and firm, and uniformly thicker. the newer edition feels cheaper and i can feel and see variations in the surface due to extra paper/glue in the cover.

So why didn't I buy the older edition? 1) Because it is not based on the latest 2011 ESV text, it's an older revision - which is why it's out of print. 2) It's 2 column format, and 1 column is much more readable.

I really wish Crossway had kept the physical form of the older edition but instead just updated to use the 2011 text and the single column format. If they did this, and they removed footnotes - this would be a truly perfect pocket NT!

First, this is the 2011 text edition of the ESV, with all the strengths and weaknesses. The print is clear and fairly large for a pocket edition. It is single column, a major plus. Consruction seems roadworthy, though the cover is a little stiff for a pocket edition..

My major distraction is that the print on the page is not square with the page shape; the type is slanting up on the page, just enough to be a distraction. The print is askew. Maybe my copy is the anomily; I hope so. For reading purposes, this edition is just fine and very readable. A good buy for the price.

Nice small size. I find the writing all the way across the page a little distracting though.

Arrived a day ahead of schedule, and I am impressed. I wanted a more portable copy of the gospels and also wanted the psalms (this also includes proverbs) and this little New Testament seemed to fit the bill. I was originally concerned that the text would be too small, but I can read it well. Love the feel of it, the leather cover is nice. Very excited to have a copy I can bring with me anywhere.
