About the Author
Ben Wilkinson studied Vietnamese at Harvard and at Hanoi National University, and has worked as an editor and travel writer in Asia. He is currently a graduate student at Harvard Law School and is the author of the Essential Vietnamese Phrase Book (Periplus Editions).

This book is concised and to the point. It is a perfect dictionary for day-to-day conversation. I am a native speaker living in the United States for over 25 years. My Vietnamese is rusty and, therefore, having a hard time expressing my ideas in conversations. This book helped me because it has practical words that I can use right a way. This is a must have for everyone. Thank you! (I suggest to also get The Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Vietnamese addition.)

I got this book for my beginning Vietnamese class at my university. The book doesn't have ALL the words in the language, but the most commonly used. I made the mistake of purchasing this one versus a more complete dictionary, but am otherwise still satisfied. The full-size dictionaries I saw used in class were MUCH thicker, and honestly don't think I would really need to lug around such a hunk of paper when I could just use the internet for the words I can't translate that aren't in this book. This book has about 80-90% of the words I use in class, and is well organized with half the book serving as a Vietnamese-to-English dictionary and the second half English-to-Vietnamese. The first few pages are also devoted as an introduction and guide to how to pronounce the the Vietnamese tones and alphabets in case you forget or want to learn.

I work in a nail shop with a lot of Vietamese people. Since I don't speak the language (as it is a hard one to learn), This English - Vietnamese pocket dictionary allows me to get my point across when needed. It fits readily in the side pocket of my purse thus I have access to it at any time.
