Book Description

Book One in the Trinity saga.

Imogen Stromholdt lives a very uninteresting and sluggish life; her days are about as fast as a snail riding a turnip. She so longs to have fun adventures of her own filled with daring plots and danger, but those dreams are as far away as a dream could be.

But her life quickly becomes filled with real danger when she meets a very suave and charming young man named Lucius Knight. Well, that, and the tiny vicious little monsters called Sea-Merrows that tried to drown her, a slightly egocentric Irish youth who can manipulate fire, and blood-thirsty vampires tracking her across the country. Not to mention the indestructible beings called Hollows that want to kidnap her by the orders of their undead master, Byron Barrowite. Other than that, she has nothing to worry about.

Imogen’s life just became a lot more interesting, and if she can just survive the giant dragon made of pure fire, she may learn just how much she enjoys getting into trouble. Her greatest weapon is her freedom of choice in this charming and darkly romantic tale of magic, murder, and destiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth It August 27, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was a bit hesitant about buying this book at first. I downloaded a sample, hemmed and hawed, and finally just bought the thing because I couldn't stop wondering what happens next. At first, the book seemed cluttered with a bunch of supporting characters. I felt like I was trying to wade through who was important and who wasn't, and the dream sequences were confusing. But hang in there! I was so glad I did. One thing did hook me pretty quickly, and that was the main character, Imogen. She's what made me take the plunge and buy the book. Despite what seemed like a slow start, I really wanted to find out what happened to her. She's a really great heroine: funny, strong-willed, smart... I could go on and on about her. She leaves so many of today's teen heroines in the dust. Imogen is not the type to sit around and mope after some mysterious supernatural boy. Nope. She's entirely, engagingly human, thrust into a world of supernatural danger in which she has a very pivotal role. She's proud of who she is and wouldn't be anyone, or anything, else than a kind, strong-willed, smart and brave human teenager.

A supernatural world has existed right under Imogen's very nose since she was born. But when this world rises up and consumes her, taking some of her old friends along and bringing new ones, she accepts these changes with the perfect mix of awe and fun. With Imogen, it's not a case of, "Oh, I can't believe it, vampires and magic exist, who ever would have guessed." Nope. Instead of taking half the book to puzzle things out and come to terms with the supernatural, her thoughts are more along the lines of, "Vampires? Magic? Cool! Let's go visit the underworld." Lucius is also great. He, also, is a character who is pretty much at peace with who he is, his vampiric nature is dangerous and sexy, protective yet supportive. I also love it that Imogen has her pick of more than one boy, and that there's no immediate sense that anyone's fated to be with anyone else. (Although I'm a strong Lucius supporter, fiery Irish teenagers are pretty great too). Porter has a real gift with characters. By the time the book is a third of the way through, I was totally into it. I loved the fire-casting Irish teenager, the fact that the supernatural gifts in the book all came with heavy price tags for the users, the vivid descriptions of setting (who wouldn't want a huge beautiful snow globe for a bedroom?), the well-drawn villains who sometimes also happen to be friends... This book is very creative, and once you get past a bit of a slow start and some confusing initial dream sequences, the pace is good, too. Plenty of action and mystery and romance.

As far as the down sides, I've already mentioned a slow and heavy start. The dream sequences eventually make sense, but to have all that information thrust on me at first was kind of confusing. Also, the book's ending gets a bit confusing, but the fabulous characters and the setting make it a worthwhile read. Since this is a series, just enough threads are left hanging that I want to buy the next to find out what happens. The book suffers from a very common indie pub problem: needs better editing. I am not a grammar/typo cop, though, so it didn't bother me. This book stands poised on the edge of a three and a four, but it's creative enough that I'm edging towards four.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Up and Coming Author. A Must Read! November 2, 2009
Format:Kindle Edition
I originally read this book awhile ago and since then I have reread it a multitude of times. I have even had the pleasure of being able to converse back and forth with Mr. Porter directly through the reading of his blog and myspace. I love this book. I am a mother of three girls, and a fan of Twilight, Harry Potter, basically anything supernatural. I have gotten used to not really being surprised by this genre of writing as there is only so much you can twist. Well, I give it up to Mr. Porter because he was able to twist me into a crazy realm of the supernatural! I love the descriptions and the story itself is wonderful. Rather than trying to write a new review for it, I decided I will share my reaction after my first time reading The Pocket Watch. It is definately a book worth the time and money.
Here is my initial response immediately after finishing The Pocket Watch:

I am NOT an eloquent writer, unlike you Mr. Porter. I am, however, an avid book reader. I love books of all shapes and sizes. I can delve into a world and not come up for days. Having said this, I have been lucky enough on occasion to read "indie" books as it may be. I love the opportunity to read something new and refreshing. I have been disappointed many times in the books I have read but this novel by far surpasses all of my expectations. I was a little timid going into reading this book.... I was thinking, "Okay, this is like Harry Potter meets Twilight" but the more I dived into the book, I realized that, although also a supernaturally themed book, it is in it's own category. A new up and coming cultural phenom. Your story is absolutely amazing. From page one of The Pocket Watch, I was captivated. The story leapt off the pages with such vivid descriptions. It allowed me to envision entire scenes in my head while not overly explaining the background, which in many cases can become wordy, boring, and completely eliminating the readers imaginative process that goes along with reading books. You truly allow the reader to envision what Imogen is seeing. Each of your characters were unique in their own right. I love the banter between Allison and Jessica, you can truly see their friendship in their first conversation. There are a lot of different characters in this book BUT as they are so endearing and so well drawn up, it makes them unforgetable. The story itself was something new and refreshing. It was a very good twist on old monsters and new ideas that allow it to be something original. I loved the explanation of vampiric feeding and their abilities. Your descriptions truly gave me the sense of being a part of the story. I felt Imogen's sorrow when discovering her family's secret, I felt her fear when her friend turned on her(albeit was against his will), I felt her anguish at the the thought of leaving, I fell in love right along with her, and I also felt her betrayal and sadness. There is just enough mystery in the book to keep it exciting but not so much that it was confusing. I honestly could not put the book down. I have three small children and yet I still finished it in three days. I haven't been this excited over a trilogy in a long time, and am already dying for the second one. So please WRITE FASTER!! :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Price-- Free June 28, 2011

Sure, this was an interesting book. As far as the plot went, it was fairly captivating and had some interesting twists. The characters, while not as fleshed out as some in other YA fiction, had at least some depth and motivation.

However, I would never let a kid read this book, because it is so chock full of typos, grammatical errors, and incorrect word usage. He used the word "irritancy" multiple times. That is indeed a word, but it is not the one that he was looking for. There are many cases of him using the wrong word, as though he used a thesaurus but couldn't be bothered to check the meaning of the word he substituted.

I can forgive errors for the sake of style and voice, but these were just errors, plain and simple. I feel like no one even edited this book, or if they did, then they shouldn't have. I found it hard to focus on the story when I found an error on every page.

Good story. Keeps you occupied to the end. Characters are well thought out and true to themselves. Could use a good editor, though.
