Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: (Creative Minds Series). CIP. Carolrhoda. May 1986. PLB $8.95. Grade 3-6 Four biographies that are compact and well written. All of the books employ an upbeat style of writing combined with occasional humor. While each of the subjects came from environments which emphasized concerns other than those which eventually became their personal missions, children are shown the connection between early interests and preoccupations and later achievements. Matzeliger and Carver are depicted in situations indicative of the racial intolerance of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Mitchell shows young readers the inequities of racial prejudice and portrays vividly the courage that these men displayed in the pursuit of their work. The biographies have a good sense of setting and contain much factual information. Dialogue does appear in all four stories, but it does not detract from credibility and is not used to excess. Of the four biographies, readers may find the one about Matzeliger, inventor of the shoe-lasting machine, to be the most enlightening, since far less has been written about him, and consequently, less is known of him than of the other three men. Black-and-white illustrations complement and enhance the texts. Karen P. Smith, Yonkers Board of Education, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Biography About the Peanut Man., February 17, 2003

This review is from: A Pocketful of Goobers: A Story about George Washington Carver (Creative Minds Biography) (Paperback)
A goober is the old name for peanuts and A POCKETFUL OF GOOBERS is a biography about George Washington Carver, the scientist who made peanuts famous. To be completely honest, I didn't know much about Carver and therefore found this children's book entertaining, educational, and informative. For instance, I learned that Carver was a gifted artist as well as a scientist and that later in life he became good friends with Henry Ford. The biography is written in a simple style that elementary students will find easy to read and Carver's life is so interesting they should find the book interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Six-Year-Old and I Enjoyed It, October 19, 2005

This review is from: A Pocketful of Goobers: A Story about George Washington Carver (Creative Minds Biography) (Paperback)
Like most six-year-olds, my son loves peanut butter. He is also interested in historical figures. Therefore this book--though it's intended for older children--was a perfect fit. My son liked hearing about Carver's travels, the way he overcame obstacles, and how, under pressure, Carver found various uses of peanuts. The story of this great man teaches the importance of determination, grace under pressure, industriousness, patience, and creativity. It inspired my son--and me as well!

I bought this book for my five-year-old grandson and had to read it first. It was very well written and a great story of a great man. Well worth the read.
