Conya Doss is definitely a product of her surroundings. Her albums speak of the soulful sounds of the 70's, especially Curtis Mayfield. Her albums arrangements definitely give me the soundtrack feel of Mayfield's 70's hits like "Sparkle" and "Claudine." In an era of electronic arrangements Ms. Doss's material harkens us back to full bands and originality. When I first heard this album, I thought again? Yet that is the very essence of Conya Doss, she is consistent in her calling of a soulful songstress. While her voice may not be a big instrument like a Whitney or a Patti LaBelle, her raspy tone is comforting and assured. Pair that with her songs of encouragement and hope and love on this new release and you get a winning and consistent release. There is so much here to enjoy from the funkiness of "Reaching For The Stars," to the piano laden ballad "I'll Say Yes," and the ballad "What About Me and You," with Chris McNeal, Ms. Doss is again in her prime. Throughout the journey of "A Pocketful of Purpose," you will find this album building upon her reputation for soulful music and direction. Put this album on and chill the wine, lower the lights and enjoy the world of Conya Doss, again and again.

When you hear good music you want to share it with everyone. Its sad when artist with this type of gift and talent go under rated in the music world. I have all of her CD's and this one did not disappoint. She is so awesome! I want to give a 2 thumbs up to whoever her producers are. They always pick the right music for her sound......can't to hear more from her in the future.

This is one of the few albums that I can listen to from top to bottom. The music & melodies are rich. The lyrical content is refreshing. Conya's voice and vocal style fit so well into everything. Anyone I play 'Dont Change' for, immediaty become fans. Hope she comes to New York sometime soon!!

It seems like every time I listen to Conya Doss, her voice has more depth, soulfulness and maturity. I’ve had a chance to review her last three records – Still, Blu Transition and now A Pocketful of Purpose. I also believe that the songwriting on this project is tighter, so Doss and her team continue to improve. Given that they started from a pretty high level, that’s a good thing.

Even with all that she has working for her, Doss comes into the music business with some built-in disadvantages: She is an educator in the Cleveland schools and she is also a parent – which means that she is the first educator. Doss takes both roles seriously, and that means she is conscientious about the images that she projects. That means Doss won’t allow herself to be objectified, which seems to be the price a lot of female vocalists have to pay for admittance into the mainstream.

It’s clear from listening to A Pocketful of Purpose that Doss was thinking about the pound of spiritual flesh that the industry often exacts from artists and about raising a son who will move through this world as healing agent. The soulful track “Letter” is a musical dispatch that her son (and all sons and daughters) will listen to and appreciate. Doss tells her son that he is loved and that he is one thing that she always wanted. She reminds him that he has a voice and to use that voice to make the world a better place. “The world is looking for leaders/I want you to grow up and be a real man,” Doss coos in a tune that works both as a charge and a lullaby.

If “Letter” is a lullaby, then “Jamie” is a cautionary tale. This song tells the story of an emerging vocalist who finds success as a singer, but loses connection to the family and friends who provided early encouragement and foundation.

Conya Doss music is outstanding and every time I play her music I am asked "Who is that?". She really gives you her all and no weak cuts on any of her CDs. This is a good example of a gifted musical artist that is not hear by the noise. The noise meaning many listeners of today's music has become one dimensional. Not exploring other genres of music that unfortunately gets lost in the shuffle. If you try her music, you want stop listening. Trust me.

Great lyrics on top of great beats = greatness. There are few artists who are genuine like Ms. Conya Doss

I was turned on to Conya Doss from her song "Don't Change" that I first heard on the Michael Basiden radio show. I finally got around to buying the CD and I'm kicking myself for not buying this CD sooner. This is a CD that you can put into your radio and let it play through, every song is worth listening to. Conya Doss has a new fan!

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone. I'm playing catch-up with Ms. Doss' works. I absolutely truly did not know about her. I don't know how she slipped past my music radar, but she did. I guess I'm so busy listening to everything from the 60's and the 70's because music is so crazy right now I just bury my ears in the best music of my lifetime. Yes I have Dwele, Jill Scott, Erykah and the super well-knowns (in my world) in my collection, but I feel really crazy not having this woman's music in my Zune, on my computer and wherever else I have music stored. SMH! WOW! Such an amazing collection of work. I'm on board now and making my purchases as I speak.
